(AP) ? Republican presidential contender Mitt Romney said Tuesday that Poland's economy is a model of small government and free enterprise that other nations should emulate, an unspoken criticism of President Barack Obama's policies in the wake of the worst recession in decades.

Wrapping up an overseas trip, the former Massachusetts governor said that "rather than heeding the false promise" of a government-dominated economy, Poland sought to stimulate innovation, attract investment, expand trade and live within its means" after the Communist era.

Shortly before ending his stumble-marred trip, Romney sought to minimize any damage from comments in Israel that sparked strong criticism from Palestinian leaders, saying his words had been mischaracterized.

In an interview with Fox News, he said he "did not speak about the Palestinian culture or the decisions made in their economy" when he told Jewish campaign donors that their own culture is part of the reason the Jewish state is more economically successful than areas where Palestinians live.

Romney also laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Warsaw before flying home to the United States, and paid tribute to the hundreds of thousands of Poles who died in a World War II ghetto uprising against the Nazis. Both are traditional gestures for dignitaries visiting Poland.

His speech seemed an attempt to link his overseas trip to the campaign at home.

He said that in his talks on Monday, one unnamed Polish leader "shared with me an economic truth that has been lost on much of the world. 'It is simple. You don't borrow what you cannot pay back,'" said Romney, who frequently criticizes Obama at home for the growth of the U.S. debt in the past four years.

"The world should pay close attention to the transformation of Poland's economy," Romney said. "A march toward economic liberty and smaller government has meant a march toward higher living standards, a strong military that defends liberty at home and abroad, and an important and growing role on the international stage."

While holding up Poland as an economic example, Romney did not mention that the nation's unemployment is measured at 12.4 percent. Unemployment in the United States is 8.2 percent.

Romney did not mention Obama by name during his speech, but he frequently accuses the president of failing to understand the importance of the private economy and favoring government solutions to the nation's problems.

Romney resumes his campaign at home with appearances Thursday in Colorado.

His aides told reporters that despite any mistakes, the trip had been a success.

Already, they were eager to turn the campaign focus back to the race against Obama.

The campaign issued a statement from its headquarters in Boston noting that the announcement of Romney's selection of a vice presidential running mate is getting closer. It unveiled an app for smartphones that it said would "serve as the campaign's first official distribution channel" for the news.

Controversy accompanied the former Massachusetts governor in Poland as in previous stops in Britain and Israel, and comments he made earlier in the trip drew criticism from China.

Xinhua News Agency said Romney's "hawkish remarks" made in Jerusalem could worsen an already tense Mideast situation, or even re-ignite a war between Palestinians and Israelis.

Earlier this week, he declared Jerusalem to be the capital of Israel, even though U.S. policy holds that the city's designation is a matter for negotiations between the Jewish state and the Palestinians. He also sparked a charge of racism from Palestinians when he told donors that the strength of Israel's economy was due in part to the country's culture.

At his first stop, in London, he drew criticism from British political leaders when he appeared to question whether the nation was fully prepared for the Olympic Games, now underway.

The Republican presidential contender has been highly critical of China throughout his campaign, promising to challenge Beijing's growing influence in East Asia and get tougher with the communist government on its human rights record.

There was some tension between reporters and Romney aides as the campaign looked to Poland as a final opportunity to project the image of a leader ready to stand on the world's stage.

The two-day trip to Poland was aimed in part at building support among Polish-American and Catholic voters in the United States.

Poles generally have been skeptical of Obama's "reset" with Russia, and Romney has cited Polish concerns in his criticism of Obama. Some in Poland and the neighboring Czech Republic were upset by the Obama administration's decision to revise the Bush-era missile defense plan for Europe, which included sites in both countries.

In his speech, Romney said of Poland: "At every turn in our history, through wars and crises, through every change in the geopolitical map, we have met as friends and allies. That was true in America's Revolutionary War. It was true in the dark days of World War II. And it has been true in Iraq and Afghanistan."

Romney delivered his remarks in a deeply Roman Catholic country that for years has favored Republicans over Democrats. This is partly a legacy of President Ronald Reagan, whose efforts helped bring down communism across Eastern Europe, for which Poles remain grateful.

Poland has been a stalwart U.S. ally and significant contributor to military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Romney met earlier in the day with Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski. They discussed the longstanding ties between the two nations as well as the conflict in Afghanistan.

"On behalf of our countrymen, I express deep appreciation for your willingness to fight with us, to stand with us, and to be our friends in times of crisis and military conflict," Romney said.

"Poland has excellent ties with the United States, regardless of which American party is in power," Sikorski said. "We remember Ronald Reagan's warm feelings for Poland's Solidarity and also the fact that we joined (NATO) during Bill Clinton's term."

Romney also stopped to view a memorial to Pope John Paul II, who was born in Poland. He then met with President Bronislaw Komorowski.

The candidate ignored shouted questions from reporters about his comments on Israel and the Palestinians. Asked why Romney has taken just three questions from American reporters during the trip, traveling press secretary Rick Gorka said, "Shove it." He later called some journalists to apologize.

Romney's visit, campaign officials said, was at the invitation of Lech Walesa, the Polish labor leader who co-founded the Solidarity movement and served as the country's president during the country's transition out of communism.

Walesa effectively endorsed Romney when they met Monday.

But Solidarity, the organization Walesa helped found more than two decades ago, characterized Romney as being hostile to unions and against labor rights. It emphasized that it had no role in organizing the visit and expressed support for American labor organizations.

Missy Franklin wins her 100 backstroke semifinal at London Olympics

Missy Franklin always dreamed of swimming in the Olympics. She never dreamed she would have to swim as much as she will Monday.

Franklin?s quest for her first individual Olympic medal comes almost directly on the heels of a semifinal in another event. She set that up by qualifying second in Sunday night?s semifinals of the 100-meter backstroke, where she had the top time in the world until an Aussie rose up to threaten her gold medal chances.

But before Franklin shoots for gold at 12:51 p.m. MDT on Monday, she swims the semifinals of the 200 freestyle at 12:30 p.m. This all comes after swimming the 200 freestyle prelim in the during what will be the early morning in Denver.

She swam the same

schedule in Omaha at the Olympic trials and still won her backstroke event.

?I?m going to try to take it the exact same way,? Franklin said. ?The chance of a warm-down is going to be a little bit lower than I had at trials. ... I may not be able to warm down at all between races (Monday). But you know what? You?ve got to take what you have and make the best of it. That?s what I plan to do.?

She?ll have to beat Australia?s 20-year-old Emily See?bohm, who set an Olympic record in the morning prelims of 58.23 seconds and won?t have another race Monday. Russia?s Anastasia Zueva, who had the best time behind Franklin in both backstroke events coming into the Olympics, qualified fifth in 59.68.

Franklin swam 59.37 in the morning, her best in a prelim, and 59.12 in the evening semifinals. Her 58.85 at the Olympic trials was the fastest Olympic time in the world this year until Seebohm showed up Sunday.

?I?m thrilled,? Franklin said. ?Second finals. I was faster than I was in prelims, so I?m excited.?

She may have to get out faster to beat Seebohm, 20,, the daughter of a swim coach who

Missy Franklin looks up at the clock to see her time after the 100 backstroke semifinal on Sunday. (John Leyba, The Denver Post)

helped Australia win the 4x100 medley relay gold medal in 2004.

?That?s the way I?ve always swam it,? Franklin said of her slow starts and fast finishes. ?That?s how I hit a 58.8, so as (coach) Todd (Schmitz) always says, ?If it?s not broken, you don?t really have to fix it.? But if I do want to be faster, I have to take it out (faster). I took it out this morning faster than I ever have before, and I have to channel that energy a little bit (Monday).?

Badminton's rock star: Lin Dan headlines London

(AP) ? The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Spice Girls, Beyonce ... and Lin Dan. Wembley Arena has rocked out to them all.

Lin, the closest thing badminton has to a rock star, turned the famed arena into his own mosh pit when the Chinese standout won one of the greatest finals in world championships history last year.

The thriller ended when he fought off two match points to deny Malaysian archrival Lee Chong Wei. Lin didn't let the drama end there: He ripped off his shirt with a guttural yell, embraced his coaches, pumped the air with two left hooks and saluted the still-applauding crowd.

Nearly a year later, he's headlining the arena again for the Olympics in hope of becoming the first man to retain the singles title.

He moved into the last 16 on Monday but he's still downplaying his chances for gold, especially for his 16 million followers on social media. But does the most decorated badminton player ever think about winning the London Games?

"Sometimes before I sleep at night, I would think about winning my second Olympic gold medal," he said. "However, I realized it was more important to remain focused on achieving my goal and not get carried away thinking too far ahead."

There was a time when impatience was his weakness. But training and maturity turned him into a winner of the Olympics, worlds, All England Open, Asian Games, and Thomas Cup ? each marked by a star tattooed on his left arm. When Lin won the Super Series Final last December, he became the first to complete what has been called the Super Grand Slam ? the winner of every major title available to an Asian, including the Sudirman Cup, World Cup and Asian championships. All by the age of 28.

His reputation's not entirely super, however. Lin has blemished his legacy through forfeits and retirements to help teammates: Seven times alone since late 2010. He's been accused of helping Chen Jin qualify for the last two Olympics by throwing the 2008 All England final and this year's Asian championships semifinal.

In fact, he's a bit of a bad boy: At the 2008 Korean Open final, Lin exchanged harsh words with South Korea's Chinese coach Li Mao after a disputed line call, threatening him and raising his racket. Then after losing, Lin scuffled with winner Lee Hyun-il. Three months later, Lin reportedly punched coach Ji Xinpeng in a pre-Olympic training camp.

Lin showed his class in the Beijing Games when he withstood the crush of expectations from home fans by crushing Chong Wei in the gold-medal final. Away from home, he expects to enjoy these London Games more.

"We have huge pressure when we play at home," he said. "All the people hope we can win every match and become champions. 'Champions, champions' is what we hear from them, or thinking about all the time. So the pressure gets bigger and bigger for us. In contrast, when we play abroad, play in a venue far from home, we feel relaxed. All we need to do is focus on the match itself."

Lin has had focus almost since he was born in southeast Fujian Province. The left-hander, who defied his parents' wish that he play piano, started badminton at the age of five. He was accepted into full-time badminton training at nine, and was picked for the national team at 18.

From the start he exhibited a quick-strike boldness, tactical nous and extraordinary footwork. Within three years of his senior international debut, he was ranked No. 1 in the world, in time for the Athens Olympics. He bombed in the first round but wasn't down for long. He became so successful, and one of China's highest-earning sportsmen, he had to register his name as a trademark in 2007 to stop it from being used by manufacturers without permission.

Since the Beijing Games, he's married Xie Xingfang, the retired two-time world champion and Beijing Olympic silver medalist, and concentrated more on titles than being No. 1. Hailed as the greatest badminton player, at least of this generation, he has stayed out of the spotlight in London. He looked relaxed though when he bumped into his friend Chong Wei outside their Wembley hotel and posed for pictures and compared expensive watches.

Their rematch in the final is the dream of fans. And one more chance to rock Wembley Arena.

All About Hearing Aids | Anti-Aging

Health and Fitness | Anti-Aging | * Written by Lori Klein Gardner, Au.D. | Monday, 30 July 2012 16:30 | Word Count: 559

Modern hearing aids assume a variety of shapes and forms, but all share a few basic features to assist those suffering from hearing loss. Each device has a microphone, which receives sound from outside your ear, an amplifier, to amplify the sound received and a miniature loudspeaker that delivers the sound into your ear canal. Beyond these three functioning technical features, the size, position and features between different hearing devices differs significantly.

Behind-the-Ear (BTE)

BTE aids hook behind the ear and connect to a smaller delivery device that sits just outside the ear canal. The two parts of the BTE connect through a small clear tube that runs behind the ear and into the delivery device. These devices are easy to adjust for volume and fit, and don?t require custom molding. While BTEs are the most visible of all hearing aid styles, they?re also the most durable and easiest to clean. Their low-maintenance requirements and durability make them a common choice for young children with hearing loss.

In-the-Ear (ITE)

ITE devices are custom made and sit just outside the area just before your ear canal, in the outer ear. The device is much smaller than behind the ear devices, but is still visible from the side view of your head. Because ITE devices sit outside the ear canal they?re sensitive to wind and other continuous soft sounds, which can muddle the quality of your hearing. These devices are relatively easy to clean and insert, and unlike some of the smaller options, ITE hearing devices use larger batteries, which allows them to last longer.

In-the-Canal (ITC)

An ITC device is custom made, and fits partially, but not entirely inside your ear canal. The small size of ITC units makes them an effective, inconspicuous choice for adults with mild to moderate hearing loss. Because the entire case is partially inside your ear canal, ITC devices adapt easily to cell phone, and landline phone use. Finally, its external accessibility allows you to adjust an ITC hearing aid for volume and microphone direction.

Completely-in-the-Canal (CIC)

CIC devices are the least visible and most internal of the hearing instrument options. Because the device sits completely inside your ear canal, outside noises, like wind, won?t cloud the quality of the microphone. Unfortunately, the smaller size requires smaller batteries, which generally have a shorter lifespan. The internal nature of a CIC also prohibits adjustments, such as volume control. Finally, because a CIC aid sits completely inside your ear canal, diligent cleaning is required daily to remove any earwax or body oils that could damage the electronic devices inside the case.

Almost all hearing aids today are digital, which produces a clearer sound with less manual adjusting. Although analog hearing aids do still exist, according to Mayo Clinic, they are increasingly less common and will be phased out shortly by digital technology. Choosing the right aid depends on your lifestyle and hearing needs. It?s also an important decision that should include your audiologist.

Divided dolphin societies unite

A unique social division among a population of bottlenose dolphins in Australia's Moreton Bay has ended, according to a new study.

The dolphins lived as two distinct groups that rarely interacted, one of which foraged on trawler bycatch.

But scientists think that a ban on fishing boats from key areas has brought the two groups together.

They believe these socially flexible mammals have united to hunt for new food sources.

The findings are published in the journal Animal Behaviour.

Dolphin see, dolphin do?

Bottlenose dolphins have large brains and quickly learn new behaviours. Using a wide range of sounds to communicate with other members of the group, or "pod", they have been observed showing remarkable individual and social intelligence:

  • One for the team: watch how a single dolphin peels off from the pod to shepherd the mullet into the open mouths of the group
  • Bubble trouble: initially cautious of the new shapes created by the bubble machine, you can see how quickly the inquisitive dolphins turn this experiment into a game
  • Mirror, mirror on the wall: from the reaction of these dolphins to their own reflection, scientists believe the animals have a developed sense of self
  • Thinking out cloud: see how these dolphins off the Florida coast have developed a unique hunting strategy for the shallows off the Florida coast

The Moreton Bay dolphins were thought to be the only recorded example of a single population that consisted of groups not associating with each other.

The split was dubbed "the parting of the pods".

But since the study that discovered the rift, trawlers have been banned from designated areas of the bay leading to a 50% reduction in the fishing effort.

A key area of the bay to the south, where the social split was first observed by a previous study, has been protected.

The changes gave scientists a unique opportunity to observe the adaptability of dolphin society.

The "trawler" dolphins from Moreton Bay had previously fed on the bycatch from boats while the "non-trawlers" found other sources of food.

"There's never been really any experiments looking at social structure... where you can compare what it was like before and what it is like now," said Dr Ina Ansmann, a marine vertebrate ecologist at the University of Queensland and the study's lead author.

Analysing how the population interacted before and after trawling meant the team could assess how the dolphins' social network had changed.

"The dolphins had basically re-arranged their whole social system after trawling disappeared so they're now actually interacting again," Dr Ansmann told BBC Nature.

The scientists identified individual dolphins by the marks on their dorsal fin and recorded which animals were associating with which.

"Each dolphin has small injuries like nicks and notches, cuts and things like that on the fin so they all have a very unique looking dorsal fin."

This technique meant that Dr Ansmann could observe changes in behaviour, in some cases down to the individual dolphins which had been studied in the 1990s to reveal the original division.

"Presumably they're sharing information, co-operating and things like that."

Dolphins operate in what is called a fission-fusion society, forming groups and then splitting up to form different groups.

Through complex communication and social intelligence, bottlenose dolphins often work as a team when hunting for food and Dr Ansmann believes this may be what lies behind the unification.

"When relying on natural food sources I guess it's more important for them to interact with others, or to learn from others, or to co-operate with others to get to these food sources," she said.

The results suggest that a flexible social structure may be an important factor in how dolphins exploit a wide range of resources in the marine environment.

Sales Training Benefits

Miscellaneous Written by Anonymous ??Saturday, 28 July 2012 20:42 Having a top functioning sales team is necessary to any business enterprise that depends on sales based profit. If your product sales experts do not work well, then your bottom line will be afflicted. As easy as it may sound, the most impressive ways to retain good sales efficiency is via Sales Traning. By educating your sales crew, you can't only improve performance but also develop some uniformity of technique across your team.

You will find both advantages and disadvantages to educating a sales staff. In many instances the advantages outweigh the minuses, but all problems should be considered. Train new salesmen in valuable and powerful sales methods. Recharge the knowledge and techniques for existing salespeople. Bring in new methods to a sales team. Keeps proper methods and procedures new. May also help build persistence in your sales process.

Then again, like we have talked about, there are some adverse facets into it. May take time far from selling actions. A new methods may contradict latest knowledge. Resistance of some sales agents to be trained something they already know. Will take time to carry out new tactics and methods. In these instances, we should be able to maintain good revenue efficiency still. A plan of on-going sales training is probably the ideal way to improve your sales process and sales usefulness.

By undertaking sales training on a regularly scheduled basis you can ensure the understanding of your staff is always strengthening. This program for training enables the continual opening of new sales strategies and lets you shift focus periodically to precise areas that require advancement. An integral element of this training course is the capacity to monitor your progress and how it is affecting your sales.

A program of on-going and prepared sales training could be a big benefit to any sales organization. If you are planning, reviewing, or setting up a system for sales training for your company always consider the subsequent issues: What are the pluses and minuses of doing the training? What areas in your sales process should be addressed or enhanced? How will you monitor your sales and the affect of the sales training? Who can attend the training? Just as with anything you do linked to your sales and sales process, training can have a significant affect. If completed in a well arranged and planned fashion, ongoing sales training can be one of the most beneficial investments for your firm.

  • Payments and other fees revenue for the second quarter was $192 million.

Excluding share-based compensation and related payroll tax expenses, non-GAAP income from operations for the second quarter was $515 million, compared to $477 million for the second quarter of 2011.

Bottomline:

Facebook reported a solid quarter. Wall Street had sky high expectations, and even though Facebook delivered on most user metrics, the traders were not pleased. Facebook stock dropped to its lowest level since IPO. This could present an attractive buying opportunity.

According to this article, "The company didn't blow the doors off of earnings, but it didn't miss Wall Street estimates."

Facebook proved that it can do good business, grow the user base, make profits and find new ways to monetize. It is a real company. What's not to like? With over 1 billion users worldwide (soon), Facebook revenue and profits can only go up from here! Add to that China entry (hopefully this year). Many other businesses would love to be in their shoes.

(AP) ? The hiccups outnumbered the highlights, and for a while the U.S. racked up fouls faster than points.

The opener wasn't artistic.

However, it was enough ? easily enough.

Kevin Durant scored 22 points in his Olympic debut, Kevin Love added 14 and LeBron James had eight assists as the American men's basketball team overcame some sloppy moments with a 98-71 win Sunday over France.

"We know everybody else expects us to win by 40 points," said Carmelo Anthony. "For us, a win's a win. We expect every game to be like this one."

Seeking a second straight gold medal to match the redemptive one they captured in Beijing four years ago, the Americans expected a tough test from a French team featuring San Antonio guard Tony Parker and five other NBA players. And although the U.S. was never in real trouble ? it only led 22-21 after one quarter ? there were enough flaws (14 turnovers, 26 fouls) to keep coach Mike Krzyzewski and his staff busy and this superstar-laden squad from feeling too comfortable.

"It wasn't perfect," said James, who only took six shots while setting up his teammates. "We've still got room for improvement. We had too many turnovers, too many fouls and we had a couple of defensive rebounds we could have come up with. But overall, we played a pretty good game for as close to 40 minutes as possible."

Kobe Bryant had said this team could beat the 1992 Dream Team that changed international hoops forever at the Barcelona Games. That matchup is mythical, but the London Games aren't and this U.S. team will have to play much better in upcoming games if it plans to maintain American dominance.

"We know we have to keep going for 40 minutes and play hard," said Bryant, who only played 12 minutes.

Afterward, Parker, who nearly missed these games after undergoing surgery for a freak eye injury, didn't want to concede anything to the Americans. But when asked if the U.S. team can be beat, he took a contemplative pause before responding.

"They're going to be very, very tough to beat," Parker said.

At times, the Americans' offense was erratic. The U.S missed its first six 3-pointers and settled too quickly for jump shots instead of driving to the basket. But France wasn't able to capitalize as the U.S. turned up its pressure on defense and forced 18 turnovers.

With first lady Michelle Obama on hand to cheer on the U.S., Durant, Anthony and Tyson Chandler added nine rebounds apiece for the Americans, who will next play Tuesday against Tunisia, beaten 60-56 by Nigeria in the tournament opener.

As they left the floor, the U.S. players stopped to hug Mrs. Obama, who can report back to her commander in chief husband that his favorite team has taken its first step toward gold.

Parker, playing with goggles to protect a surgically repaired left eye, scored 10 points but France fell to 0-5 in Olympic competition against the USA. Ali Traore scored 12 points to lead France, which got few uncontested looks from the outside and missed 20 of 22 3-pointers.

"They pressured us from the start until the end," said France coach Vincent Collet.

With the U.S. leading 52-36 at halftime, Durant opened the second half with a 3-pointer, Bryant dropped one from long range and after James dunked an alley-oop pass from Deron Williams, the Americans led 64-43.

Au revoir, France.

The U.S. team's lead ballooned to 78-51 after three quarters, allowing Krzyzewski to rest Bryant, James and Durant for most of the fourth quarter. With the game well in hand, Krzyzewski even gave 19-year-old Anthony Davis, the top pick in June's NBA draft, his first taste of Olympic play.

Durant had struggled to score during a recent exhibition tour, prompting James to give his close friend and teammate a pep talk.

"I told K.D. to be himself," James said. "We need the K.D. who scores. We don't need the K.D. who defers."

Unlike his peers, Krzyzewski has the luxury of a deep bench and he was forced to go it early and often in the first half, when the Americans got into four trouble. They were called for 18 personals and complained about some of the calls. Anthony and Russell Westbrook spent the final six minutes of the second quarter on the bench after picking up their third fouls.

"There were a lot of calls that didn't seem right," Anthony said. "One time down the floor they called it this way and one time they called it that way."

Along with the questionable calls, the Americans took some curious shots early on, and when France's Yannick Bokolo drained a 3 in the final second of the first quarter, France was within 22-21.

Nicolas Batum, who plays for Portland, thought the U.S. might "panic."

But James opened the second quarter with a 3, the U.S. quickly went on an 11-0 run and by midway through the third, Bryant and Co. restored order.

As the U.S. reserves scored on dunk after dunk in the fourth, James and Bryant lounged on the bench.

They know there will be tougher games ahead.

The first one, though, was over.

"We knew this game wasn't going to be easy," Durant said. "We know even if we don't start well we can finish."

Four Clinical Trials Further Clarify The Role Of Physical Activity In ...

*?Reuters is not responsible for the content in this press release.

Resistance Training Emerging as Particularly Valuable for Older Adults

VANCOUVER, British Columbia,?July 15, 2012?/PRNewswire-USNewswire/ ??Four studies reported today at the Alzheimer?s Association International Conference? 2012 (AAIC? 2012) describe the ability of targeted exercise training to promote improved mental functioning and reduced risk for cognitive impairment and dementia in cognitively healthy older adults and those with mild cognitive impairment (MCI).

The reports, from 6- and 12-month randomized controlled clinical trials, depict the beneficial effects of different types of exercise ? resistance training, aerobic training, and balance-stretching training ? on a variety of cognitive abilities, brain structure, functional neural plasticity, growth factors, and risk factors for cognitive decline such as depression and sleep quality.

?Currently, the strongest data for lifestyle-based Alzheimer?s risk reduction is for physical activity, yet this data is generally observational and considered preliminary, said?William Thies, PhD, Alzheimer?s Association? Chief Medical and Scientific Officer. ?These new intervention studies are taking place over longer periods of time to begin to clarify exactly which types of physical activity are most effective, how much needs to be done, and for how long. In particular, where previously we had seen positive associations between aerobic activity, particularly walking, and cognitive health, these latest studies show that resistance training is emerging as particularly valuable for older adults.?

It is generally accepted that regular physical activity is essential to healthy aging; it also may prove to be a strategy to delay or prevent the onset of cognitive impairment and dementia.

?It is very important to learn more about factors that actually raise and lower risk for cognitive decline and Alzheimer?s. To do that, we need long-term studies in large, diverse populations, and we need the research funding to conduct those trials. For example, we have learned very practical lifestyle risk factors for heart disease from long-term research like the Framingham Study. Alzheimer?s now needs its version of that research,? Thies added.

?By midcentury, care for people with Alzheimer?s will cost the U.S. over?$1 trillion. This will be an enormous and unsustainable strain on the healthcare system, families, and federal and state budgets. The first-ever U.S. National Plan to Address Alzheimer?s was unveiled in May, and now this plan must be speedily and effectively implemented. An additional?$100 million?is needed now for Alzheimer?s research, education, outreach and community support,? Thies said.

Moderate walking may grow brain region related to memory; increase nerve growth factor

According to?Kirk Erickson, PhD, of the?University of Pittsburgh, ?There is growing interest in lifestyle factors and interventions that enhance the cognitive vitality of older adults and reduce the risk for cognitive impairment. However, very little is understood regarding the molecular processes that contribute to enhanced brain health with exercise, or the impact that greater brain volume has on cognitive function.?

Erickson and colleagues randomized 120 older adults without dementia who have been sedentary for the previous six months to a moderate intensity walking group or a stretching-toning group for one year. MRI was used to measure the size of a brain region associated with memory, known as the hippocampus, both before and after the exercise intervention. Blood was drawn to measure concentrations of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), and a cognitive testing battery was conducted before and after the intervention.

The researchers found that, in this study group, one year of exercise training increased the size of the hippocampus by two percent (2%) in the walking group compared to the stretching-toning group. (Significant shrinking of the hippocampus is characteristic of Alzheimer?s disease.) The increase in hippocampal volume was correlated with similar changes in BDNF.

?Our findings suggest that the aging brain remains modifiable, and that sedentary older adults can benefit from starting a moderate walking regimen,? Erickson said.

Resistance training may improve thinking and memory in older adults with MCI

Exercise and regular physical activity may prove to be promising intervention strategies to postpone or prevent Alzheimer?s dementia, but perhaps not all types of training are equally effective.

PhD student?Lindsay Nagamatsu, of?University of British Columbia,?Vancouver, Canada, and colleagues with the EXCEL (EXercise for Cognition and Everyday Living) study compared the effects of both twice-weekly resistance training (weight lifting) (n=28) and twice-weekly aerobic training (walking) (n=30) with twice-weekly balance and tone exercises (n=28) on executive cognitive function in women aged 70-80 with probable MCI in a 6-month randomized controlled trial.?Teresa Liu-Ambrose, PhD, PT, of the?University of British Columbia?and Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute, was the principal investigator of EXCEL and supervises Nagamatsu.

Compared with the balance and tone group, the resistance training group significantly improved performance on the Stroop Test, which measures selective attention and conflict resolution, and a memory task. Resistance training also led to functional changes in three brain regions involved in memory. In contrast, the aerobic training group did not show similar improvements.

?MCI is a critical window to intervene against dementia,? Liu-Ambrose said. ?We found that twice-weekly resistance training is a promising strategy to alter the trajectory of cognitive decline in seniors with MCI.?

?Furthermore, we found that the aerobic training group had improved performance on a different memory task called the Rey Auditory Visual Learning Test. So both exercise groups improved their memory scores, but on different types of memory. More research is needed to determine the differential effects of these two types of exercise training,? Nagamatsu added.

Higher functioning older adults may be more likely to show cognitive benefits from resistance training

Nader Fallah, PhD, and colleagues at the?University of British Columbia,?Vancouver?used multi-state modeling* to investigate: 1) the simultaneous effect of exercise training and baseline factors on changes in executive cognitive function, and 2) the effect of exercise training on an individual?s probability for cognitive improvement, maintenance, or decline.

*Multi-state models are models for processes that at any time occupy one of a few possible conditions or situations. For example, this model can be used to estimate the impact of physical activity on the individual probabilities of cognitive improvement, stability or decline. It allows analysis of changes in all directions, especially improvement ? which has had relatively little attention but appears to be essential to understanding how neurodegenerative disease occurs.

Specifically, they performed a secondary analysis of a 12-month randomized, controlled clinical trial conducted in?Vancouver?of 155 community-dwelling women aged 65 to 75 years old who were randomly assigned to either resistance training or balance and tone training. The primary outcome measure was performance on the Stroop Test, an executive cognitive test of selective attention and conflict resolution.Teresa Liu-Ambrose, PhD, PT, of the?University of British Columbia?and Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute, was the principal investigator of this study and supervises Fallah.

The scientists found that:

  • The probability of improving or maintaining results of the test were higher with resistance training among the study participants with higher function at beginning of the study.
  • Resistance training and balance and tone exercises had similar effect among those with lower function at baseline.
  • Overall, those in the balance and tone group demonstrated a significantly lower probability for improved performance on the Stroop Test, and a significantly higher probability of decline.

?To our knowledge, this is the first study to demonstrate that an individual?s baseline self-regulatory capacity impacts the amount of cognitive benefit the person will reap from targeted exercise training,? Fallah said.

?Before our study, we had no appreciation of the simultaneous impact of targeted exercise training and other factors, such as baseline cognitive status, on cognitive change in older adults. By using a multi-state transition model, we demonstrated that the probability of improving selective attention and conflict resolution in older adults is most evident among those with higher baseline cognitive status ? which is different from the current general opinion,? Liu-Ambrose said.

Combination training (aerobic + strength + balance) may improve memory in people with MCI

Hiroyuki Shimada, PhD, and colleagues at the National Center for Geriatrics and Gerontology, Obu, Aichi,Japan, conducted a randomized trial to test the impact of a 12-month, supervised, multicomponent exercise on cognitive function among older adults with amnestic (memory-related) MCI. The exercise program included aerobic exercise, muscle strength training, and postural balance retraining.

?Previous reviews suggested that combined aerobic exercise and strength training improved cognitive and physical functions more than aerobic exercise alone,? Shimada said.

The final study population consisted of 47 older adults with amnestic MCI, 65 to 93 years old. Participants were randomized either to multicomponent exercise (n = 25) or an education control group (n = 25). People in the multicomponent exercise group exercised under the supervision of physiotherapists for 90 minutes/day, 2 days/week, 80 times for 12 months. People in the control group attended three education classes about health during the 12-month period. Measurements of cognitive function (Logical Memory II subtest of the Wechsler memory scale-revised, letter and category fluency, digit symbol coding, and Stroop color word test) were administered after 6 and 12 months.

The scientists found that the multicomponent exercise and educational program improved performance on Logical Memory II subtest of the Wechsler memory scale-revised. Additionally, there was a significant interaction effect for letter fluency test between groups.

?In other words, the ability to use language of the multicomponent exercise group improved significantly compared with the educational program group,? Shimada said. ?Our findings suggest that an exercise intervention can, at least partly, improve or maintain cognitive performance in older adults with amnestic MCI.?

Cubs?end Cardinals' winning streak at 4

Associated Press Sports

updated 4:50 p.m. ET July 28, 2012

CHICAGO (AP) - St. Louis rookie Joe Kelly is piling up plenty of positive impressions, just not a lot of wins.

Kelly wound up on the losing end again Saturday after pinch hitter Reed Johnson drove in the go-ahead with a bunt single in the seventh inning, giving the Chicago Cubs a 3-2 victory and ending the Cardinals' four-game winning streak.

Despite the loss, Kelly (1-4) recorded his seventh straight quality start.

After giving up a two-run triple to Alfonso Soriano, Kelly set down the next 14 batters, including four straight strikeouts at one point. He struck out a career-best six.

Cardinals manager Mike Matheny was asked if he envisioned Kelly finishing the season in the rotation.

"To me, we are in that scenario right now. He's pitched great for us. We just keep going," he said.

"We are very content with what we got. If your starters are going out and giving quality starts, which he has given just as many as anyone lately, that's all you can ask," he said,

Kelly has moved into the rotation while Jaime Garcia recovers from a shoulder strain.

"That's all I can ask for. Wins and losses are out of my control," Kelly said.

The Cubs had lost five in a row to St. Louis. Chicago has won nine of its last 11 overall at Wrigley Field.

Johnson caught the Cardinals by surprise when he squared up on the first pitch with runners on first and third and two outs. His bunt fell perfectly between reliever Brian Fuentes and third baseman Matt Carpenter, allowing pinch-runner Tony Campana to score.

"It was a good play. It's probably not what you would expect. It's a risky situation for them, put the runner in motion and lay down a bunt. Had a lot of faith in themselves and (he) laid down a good one," Fuentes said.

James Russell (3-0) earned the win in relief.

Carlos Marmol pitched the ninth for his 13th save in 15 chances. He struck out Skip Schumaker and got John Jay on a groundout with pinch-runner Tyler Greene on second to end the game.

Bryan LaHair drew a leadoff walk in the seventh from Kelly. Campana entered the game and stole his 26th base in 29 tries, then went to third on Geovany Soto's single. Two outs later, Johnson bunted for a hit.

Kelly allowed three runs over a career-high 6 1-3 innings. He hasn't allowed more than three runs in any of his nine outings this season.

Both starters struggled early, then settled down - combining to strike out seven straight batters at one point.

Cubs starter Jeff Samardzija's first seven pitches eluded the strike zone and he walked the bases full on 16 pitches. He limited St. Louis to one run in the inning on an RBI grounder by Carlos Beltran.

Kelly allowed hits to three of the Cubs' first four batters. David DeJesus singled to start the game, followed by Starlin Castro's double. Both scored on Soriano's two-run triple that bounced around the left-field corner and got away from Matt Holliday. It was Soriano's first triples since last Aug. 11.

Samardzija's control problems returned in the sixth, when St. Louis loaded the bases on a pair of walks and a broken-bat single by Yadier Molina. Daniel Descalso tied the score at 2 with a sacrifice fly to deep right.

Samardzija finished with seven strikeouts in six innings but walked six, the second-most in his career. He walked seven against the Cardinals on Sept. 26, 2010 at Wrigley Field.

NOTES: Cardinals 3B David Freese was held out of the starting lineup for the second straight day after leaving Thursday's win over the Dodgers because of cramping in his right calf. He was available for pinch-hitting duty on Saturday and Matheny expects him to return to the lineup for Sunday's series finale. ... Cubs RHP Matt Garza reported no problems after throwing off flat ground on Saturday. He is slated to throw a bullpen session on Monday and if that goes well, he is in line to make his next start in the latter part of next week. Garza left his last outing on July 21 because of cramping. An MRI showed a small trace of fluid buildup in his right triceps. ... Sveum was ejected after the seventh inning by 1B umpire Mike Winters for arguing that Castro had beaten out an infield hit with the bases loaded.

The ISESCO Dismisses Abusively a Moroccan Researcher for ...

By Loubna Flah

Morocco World News

Casablanca, July 27, 2012

Ms. FA C., a brilliant and young Moroccan researcher could not imagine that the mere fact of demanding her legitimate rights would cost her position as an administrative assistant in the department of culture and communication in the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization( ISESCO). She preferred to keep her anonymity for personal reasons.

The Moroccan researcher had addressed earlier a letter to the ISESCO director general Mr. Abdelaziz Touijri claiming the right to be affiliated to the National Fund for Social Security commonly known as the CNSS. Ms. FA.C advocated also the right to have the status and the salary of a program specialist in equivalence with her MA degree as stipulated in the ISESCO internal charter. She also expressed her right to have a permanent job after six month of work in addition to the right to social security coverage after retirement.

Faced with the director general lethargy, Ms. F.C delegated the matter to her lawyer who sent a letter to the ISESCO president Mr. Touijri urging him to grant Ms. FA.C her rights in compliance with the ISESCO internal charter.

In an interview with Morocco World News, Ms. FA.C said that ?the ISESCO received a letter with my demands via my lawyer on July 17th. The following day and with no further delay I was handed the dismissal letter and asked to leave my office in a very rude way. I was not even allowed to log out form my mailbox and to switch off my computer?

The head of administrative affairs who signed the dismissal decision states that Ms. FA.C was fired because she committed a serious mistake without stating explicitly the kind of mistake that owed her position inside the Islamic organization. He adds that she had breached the ISESCO organic law.

Ms. FA.C earned a BA in Islamic theology and a BA in political science from Mohammed V University in Rabat. She graduated from Sheffield Hallam University in UK where she obtained an MA degree in cultural policy and management. She also obtained a fellowship position in Women, Religion and Globalization project at Yale University in the USA. She is currently conducting her PHD research in religion and politics. Ms. FA.C signed a contract with the ISESCO on March 21, 2011.

Ms. FA.C pinpoints that there are similar antecedent cases of abusive dismissal where one of her former colleagues was fired who has resorted to justice to recover his rights. It is noteworthy that the ministry of foreign affairs and solidarity has already requested the ISESCO to register all its employees including the contractors like Ms. FA.C to social security.

The ISESCO is an Islamic organization that aims at promoting and the consolidating cooperation opportunities among the members of the OIC (the Organization of Islamic Conference) in the fields of education, science, culture and communication. The ISESCO seeks also to promote tolerance, world peace and security through its various programs.

The ISESCO current director general Mr. Touijri has been at the head of the Islamic for organization since 1991 though the ISESCO charter stipulates in the Article 13th that the president can be elected by the General Conference for a three-year term, renewable only twice, upon a proposal by the Executive Council. This incident raises serious questions regarding the ISESCO obligations towards its employees as well as the transparency in its management.
