Lindsay Lohan could face jail after March trial in California

Lohan was ordered to appear at yesterday?s hearing because she decided to switch lawyers. ? Reuters pic

LOS ANGELES, Jan 31 ? Actress Lindsay Lohan will stand trial on March 18 on charges she lied to California police about a June car crash and violated probation, raising the possibility she could be sent back to jail.

A judge in Los Angeles yesterday set the trial date on charges related to the car crash and said the court will hold a hearing at the same time on whether Lohan in the incident violated probation from a 2011 jewelry theft.

The star of the movie ?Mean Girls,? who has been in and out of rehab and jail since 2007, wore a black sleeveless dress and looked tired at the brief court hearing. She arrived in Los Angeles late Tuesday from New York and has abandoned her longtime lawyer in favour of new attorney Mark Heller.

Lohan has pleaded not guilty to three misdemeanor charges of reckless driving, lying to police and obstructing police when she said she was not behind the wheel of her sports car, which smashed into a truck in Santa Monica, California in June.

Lohan, 26, left court without speaking to the media.

The former ?Parent Trap? child star has been in and out of trouble since a 2007 arrest for drunk driving and cocaine possession.

Sautner warned Lohan that she could be found in violation of probation even if she is acquitted on charges connected to the car crash because the standard of proof is lower.

Lohan was ordered to appear at yesterday?s hearing because she decided to switch lawyers, firing longtime attorney Shawn Holley this month.

She was arrested in New York on a misdemeanor assault charge on the same day in November that the Santa Monica car crash charges were filed. The Manhattan district attorney?s office has not filed a criminal complaint in the assault case.

Lohan?s appearance in Los Angeles had been in doubt after Heller wrote to the court earlier this week saying was suffering from an upper respiratory infection and could not appear.

?Glad to see you?re feeling better,? Judge Stephanie Sautner told Lohan at the hearing. ? Reuters

Thailand in Vogue with launch of local edition

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Squeals of delight erupted from two Thai women dressed in elegant designer labels as they scanned a rack of fashion magazines at a high-end Bangkok shopping mall, then pounced on the object of their quest: a copy of the Thai edition of Vogue.

"It's here, it's here," shouted Athitiya Santisuk, 31, to her friend as they eagerly turned the glossy pages.

The fashion bible's launch in Thailand on Jan 25 heralded a new era for budding fashionistas and a growing middle class whose tastes are becoming more discerning even as the Thai fashion industry grows more international, highlighted by a twice-yearly fashion week.

"Vogue has become an indicator of economic development and the sophistication of a nation. Thailand's luxury industry is mature and this is a barometer of an emerging, affluent middle class," Kullawit Laosuksri, Vogue Thailand's editor-in-chief, told Reuters.

The Thai edition, published by Conde Nast International with a Thai company, is chock full of advertising, just like its overseas cousins - including those promoting skin whitening products, a reflection of Thailand's obsession with light skin.

"Vogue Thailand will have a strong beauty component, perhaps slightly more than other Vogues," James Woolhouse, President of Conde Nast Asia Pacific, told Reuters.

Among the articles are a photo spread of Thailand's Queen Sirikit in her younger days and several fashion shoots using Bangkok as a backdrop. The cover features Si Tanwiboon, a Thai-Chinese model who has graced catwalks at Jean Paul Gaultier and Louis Vuitton.

But the magazine's presence in Thailand raises questions over the country's income gap and the stark difference between the lifestyle of many of Bangkok's urbanites and some 66 percent of the population who live in slums on the city's periphery or in rural areas far from modern, multi-storey shopping malls.

The number of Thai millionaires is expected to swell by 35 percent between 2010 - 2015, says the Swiss-based Julius Baer private-banking group, and that wealth is partly what has helped fuel the appetite for luxury shopping malls in the city.

"We are seeing an increase in both the investment in the fashion retail space and the sales of luxury goods," said Woolhouse.

Editor-in-chief Kullawit said he wants the magazine, which costs 100 baht, to inspire Thai women and "give them new ideas like how to mix high-end brands with pieces that are readily available in Thailand's flea markets".

Yet the products advertised in Vogue remain beyond the reach of the vast majority of Thai citizens, many of whom make only some 300 baht ($10) a day.

At a road-side stall steps away from the luxury Central World shopping mall in Bangkok, Pratum Singthimas sells papaya salad and makes 530 baht ($17.73) on average a day.

"It looks like a magazine for a 'Khun Noo'," she said, choosing a Thai expression for privileged women that can imply spoilt or pampered.

Analysts gave the magazine mixed reviews but said its arrival brought more positives than negatives.

"The articles will give less affluent people a taste of the world outside Thailand and could help stimulate debate in a country that, unlike America, is not big on free speech or challenging social structures," said Kan Yuenyong, director of Siam Intelligence Unit, a Bangkok think tank.

Fashion insiders point to an overall preference for high-street labels over luxury brands.

"The Thai middle class is a lot more dependent on mass brands mimicking luxury brands. This not only takes away from the luxury market but also hinders the success of young, emerging designers," said Hestie Roodt, a teacher at Accademia Italiana, a design institute in Bangkok.

Kullawit said he aimed for a mix of Thai and Western models with the magazine, which would be "surprisingly Thai."

But the reception from online fashionistas was cool.

"Boring. I thought Vogue was supposed to be international in its outlook. It looks like other Thai magazines," said Gaga91.

Egypt's opposition leader calls for broad national dialogue involving powerful military

CAIRO - Egypt's liberal opposition leader on Wednesday called for a broad national dialogue with the Islamist government, all political factions and the powerful military, aimed at stopping the country's eruption of political violence that has left 60 dead the past week.

Nobel Peace Prize winner Mohamed ElBaradei's appeal appeared to be aimed at responding to a sharp warning by the head of the armed forces a day earlier that Egypt could collapse unless the country's feuding political factions reconcile.

But so far the opposition National Salvation Front headed by ElBaradei and the government of President Mohammed Morsi have been at loggerheads, with the front demanding Morsi make major concessions as a condition for any dialogue. Morsi has ignored their demands, holding his own "national dialogue" program, mainly with his own Islamist allies.

Meanwhile, violence has spiraled after first erupting in Cairo on eve of last Friday's second anniversary of the uprising that toppled authoritarian president Hosni Mubarak. It since spread around the country, with the worst violence in the Suez Canal city of Port Said, which has virtually declared itself in revolt against Morsi's government.

In response, Morsi declared a 30-day state of emergency and night curfew in Port Said and two other Canal cities, Suez and Ismailiya, and their surrounding provinces. But every night since it went into effect, tens of thousands of residents in the city have defied the curfew with nighttime rallies and marches, chanting against Morsi and the Musllim Brotherhood, which forms the backbone of his rule.

In a Tweet, ElBaradei called for an immediate meeting between Morsi, the defense and interior ministers, the Brotherhood's political party, the National Salvation Front and parties of the ultraconservative Salafi movement "to take urgent steps to stop the violence and start a serious dialogue."

He said stopping the violence is the priority, but stuck by the front's previous conditions for holding a dialogue ? that Morsi form a national unity government and form a commission to amend contentious articles of the Islamist-backed constitution.

There was no immediate response from the presidency or the Muslim Brotherhood on ElBaradei's new call. Morsi was on a brief visit to Germany and was expected back in Egypt later Wednesdsay.

Over the past week, Morsi ignored ElBaradei's demands, and the Brotherhood said they don't accept conditions for talks.

The Front has depicted the unrest as a backlash against Islamists' insistence on monopolizing power and as evidence that the Brotherhood and its allies are unable to manage the country on their own.

Morsi has been holding his own national dialogue program for more than a month, touting it as a chance for non-Islamists to make their voice heard in decision-making. But almost all opposition groups have shunned it as mere window dressing.

Officials in the presidency and the Brotherhood have blamed the opposition for instigating the violence, accusing them of trying to bring down Morsi, Egypt's first freely elected president.

Late Tuesday, Morsi authorized governors of the three provinces to either cancel or limit curfew hours in an attempt to assuage public anger. Suez Governor Gen. Samer Aglan said that he will ease up the curfew while deploying more troops to the streets after midnight.

Is It Illegal to Unlock Your Smartphone? - Mobile Phones ... - FindLaw

Back in the Wireless Dark Ages, you actually had to get a new phone number if you hopped between cell phone carriers. In 2003, the Federal Communications Commission adopted local number portability rules, and made it all better.

Last week, you could legally unlock or "jail break" your cell phone, and take it with you if you hopped between cell phone carriers. Now, the Library of Congress has made it all worse.

Saturday, it became illegal to unlock a new smartphone without permission, the Los Angeles Times reports.

How did this happen, and who can you blame? Surprisingly, the Library of Congress and the Digital Millennium Copyright Act are at fault.

The Library of Congress promulgates regulations under the DMCA. In the past, the LOC had approved an exemption that permitted users to unlock their phones and use them on different networks. Carriers fought to the exemption, and the LOC chose not to renew it in October 2012, The New York Times reports.

Apparently, the good folks over at the LOC think that the abundance of options in the mobile marketplace -- including the ability to buy unlocked devices -- provided ample alternatives to circumvention. The final rule implementing the change states:

The marketplace has evolved such that there is now a wide array of unlocked phone options available to consumers. While it is true that not every wireless device is available unlocked, and wireless carriers' unlocking polices are not free from all restrictions, the record clearly demonstrates that there is a wide range of alternatives from which consumers may choose in order to obtain an unlocked wireless phone.

The silver lining on this otherwise dark DMCA cloud is that the changes won't affect "legacy phones." CNET reports that "used (or perhaps unused) phones previously purchased or otherwise acquired by a consumer," are okay to unlock.

Preparing for Death | Catholic Chapter House Blog

Written by: Patricia Everaert

It?s a fact of life: we?re going to die. God willing, we will be granted many long and happy years, and meet our end peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, ready to enter the presence of our Lord.

We are reminded far too often that death isn?t that cooperative. It can be sneaky and unkind. It is also indiscriminate, visiting the unprepared and the knowing in equal measure. It leaves grief, anger, confusion, and division in its wake, but that doesn?t stop it from ravaging families or entire communities.

Death makes us uncomfortable. We try to escape its inevitability through denial or vitamins. We believe we can transcend fate, as written in some of our great poetry ?Though lovers be lost, love shall not, and death shall have no dominion? ~ Dylan Thomas.

Thomas was absolutely right ? love ultimately conquers all, and our physical, earthly death is a new birth into eternal life. And yet, death is an unavoidable reality we have to face. This isn?t a topic I was excited to write about. We?ve just concluded our Christmas feasting; we?ve entered a new year of hope and promise, a Year of Faith. And yet, I feel very strongly the need to encourage you to prepare yourselves well for death.

Do all you can now in order to have a holy death. Pray, receive the sacraments, make your peace each day with God, beg the intercession of St. Joseph asking him to be with you in your moment of dying.

Do all you can now in order to have a peaceful death, whether you expect it or not.? Don?t leave forgiveness and reconciliation for tomorrow. Don?t leave the important things unsaid.

Do all you can now in order to have a quiet death. Don?t leave chaos and confusion behind you. Set your affairs in order now. Make provision for your children, settle your property, clean house. Make sure the pertinent people know where the paperwork is. Make your wishes known if you have strong feelings about your funeral and burial. If possible, make arrangements now for a burial plot. Ensure your finances are sorted in such a way that there will be no undue hardship for those who may need access to accounts, passwords, contracts.

This isn?t a morbid insistence that we all live in fear of an imminent death. A week before Christmas, the daughter of a friend died from cancer more quickly than anyone thought. Her husband and two young children had to make difficult decisions in the midst of their shock and grief. Not long ago, my friend?s mom died, again, unexpectedly. It?s taken my friend two years to sort through everything her mother left behind, all the collections, papers, files, all the ?just in case? stuff her mom couldn?t bring herself to get rid of. Instead, my friend had two years of physical labour and emotional turmoil, the constant decisions about whether to keep or where to dispose of the things that were inextricably linked to her mother?s memory.

This is not about guilt trips. I want to share my own experience. My dad died four years ago, on December 28. Two years prior to that, we discovered he had a condition that would ultimately end his life. It wasn?t until that September that we were told point-blank the bald fact: he was going to die, and fairly soon.? At the time, it was the cruelest news anyone could have given us. It turns out to have been the greatest blessing because we were able to do all those things I encouraged you to do above.

My dad was ready spiritually. He was completely at peace and was able to put himself with utter trust into the hands of Our Lady, and had no hesitation about where he was at with God. He was able to write notes for my mom about things he wanted her to know ? even how to use her mirrors when navigating the car. Never a terribly demonstrative or communicative man, he left me in no doubt as to his love for me, and I am so very, very grateful I was able to do the same for him. I didn?t want to let him go, but I could do so without regrets. He and mom bought their burial plots, selected his casket. He had his estate in order and talked it through with his executor ? and still the endless forms and phone calls and notifications after his death were difficult and seemingly endless. I can?t imagine having to do any of that while we were reeling with grief.

There is no need to be afraid of dying. We know our God is a loving, merciful Father. He has provisioned us with all we need to avail ourselves of His mercy, His grace. He has also blessed us with practicality and wisdom. Let?s make use of all His gifts to make sure that we and those we love, are prepared for a holy death.

The most beautiful explanations

This_Explains_Everything.jpg

Tiffany O'Callaghan, CultureLab editor

A COLLECTION of essays by big thinkers answering big questions may never be a page-turner, but should still be deeply satisfying. And This Explains Everything delivers.

Its editor, John Brockman, is the man behind the Edge website, which has been inviting scientists, philosophers, artists and science journalists to tackle a big question annually since 1998.

The 2012 question comes from neuroscientist Steven Pinker: "What is your favourite deep, elegant or beautiful explanation?" It draws thoughtful responses, collected here, from a diverse band that includes Nobel prizewinning physicist Frank Wilczek, philosopher Gloria Origgi and Pixar co-founder Alvy Ray Smith.

Charles Darwin's evolution by natural selection earns many nominations, but other answers range widely. For example, psychologists Stephen Kosslyn and Robin Rosenberg celebrate classical conditioning, discovered by Ivan (salivating dogs) Pavlov, and computer scientist Jon Kleinberg uses your family tree to illustrate the pigeonhole principle in mathematics, his choice.

Alan Alda, best known as Hawkeye in the 1970s TV show Mash, quotes Hamlet's famous line: "There are more things in heaven and earth... than are dreamt of in your philosophy." Though far from science, Hamlet captures an essential truth, Alda argues: "With every door into nature we nudge open, 100 new doors become visible."

Superb Jacksonville web design for your ecommerce website

There is no doubt that ecommerce is the entrepreneurial frontier for the future. Entrepreneurs are trooping to the web hoping to strike a rich vein but many have found ecommerce success very elusive and gotten discouraged. A lot has been written about ecommerce, with many gurus advising readers n the best strategies for internet business success. These strategies have worked for many people but many more have continued to languish in failure, wondering just what it is they are missing.

One of the things that could be slowing down your accent to the top of Ebusiness is poor web design. It may sound ironical to blame failure in ecommerce on poor Hilton head web design considering the manner in which modern websites are splashed with color and enhancements, and all sorts of other bells and whistles. Many entrepreneurs don't realize how futile and counterproductive all these things are and so they continue investing in them with no discernible benefit to their overall business.

If you are aspiring to succeed in ecommerce you should realize that your website is your primary marketing tool and begin to see it as such. Unless you are really good with Hilton head web design, the expert advice of a Jacksonville web design guru will do a lot of good for your business. Your web design guru of choice should build a proper website devoid of useless enhancements yet designed to attract customers, hold their attention, and entice them into making a purchase or signing up for whatever it is you are offering them. What should you expect from your web designer?

To begin with, all the useless clutter must go because it adds no value and also because it distracts and irritates people visiting your website. It is immensely annoying, for instance, when you open a page and then a video begins playing automatically or pop-ups appear exhorting you to sign up for this or that. An expert web designer will omit such irritating stuff and implement a very neat intuitive design instead. Your web designer should give your website a look and feel that is most appropriate for its purpose. If you are selling healthy organic veggies, for example, your website should have brilliant colors associated with fresh produce and perhaps enticing images of fresh fruits and vegetables carefully displayed to entice without clouding out the important content on the site's pages.

Your Hilton head web design consultant should then create a navigation system that'll permit users to locate whatever information they want as easily as possible. People neither like it if they have to struggle to find information, nor are they pleased if they can't find the checkout section of your website easily. Many times potential customers abandon websites if they can't find their way around even if good products have been availed on sale. If this doesn't click, visualize yourself lost in a labyrinthine mall without a single sign to direct you - you'll certainly not want to return to such a place again.

Finally, your Jacksonville web design expert should design an appropriate contact page and order form. If you hope to build a loyal customer base, it is essential that customers are easily able to reach you with their queries and/or complaints. If people hit a brick wall each time they try to reach you, they will simply start shopping elsewhere.

Reid: Replace automatic cuts in short increments

(AP) ? The top Democrat in the Senate said Tuesday that lawmakers should redouble their efforts to replace looming across-the-board cuts to the Pentagon and domestic programs with alternative spending cuts and tax hikes.

The comments by Majority Leader Harry Reid came amid increasing resignation among both Democrats and Republicans that the across-the-board cuts will soon take effect. The cuts were an element of the so-called fiscal cliff that was partially averted this month with the extension of Bush-era tax cuts.

But the reprieve from spending cuts of 7 percent to the Pentagon and 5 percent to domestic programs was only temporary and will expire March 1. The cuts are known as sequestration in Washington-speak.

Republican controlling the House had led the battle to avert sequestration last year by passing replacement cuts, while Democrats put their faith in high-level budget talks involving President Barack Obama and House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, ? which failed ? and in later, successful negotiations between Vice President Joe Biden and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.

But House Republicans now say that the across-the-board cuts provide incentive to Democrats to agree to a broader budget pact and they appear willing to let them take effect ? despite having issued dire warnings just last year of their impact on the Pentagon.

Reid said the cuts should be replaced "in short increments" with spending cuts and revenues like repealing oil and gas subsidies that were discussed in earlier negotiations.

"There are many low-hanging pieces of fruit out there that Republicans have said they agreed on previously," Reid said. There's a lot of things we can do out there, and we're going to make an effort to make sure that there is ? sequestration is ? involves revenue."

Republicans tend to represent states that have more at stake if the cuts take effects. Many GOP-dominated southern states, for instance, have major defense installations. And defense hawks warn that the cuts could cripple the military as problems fester around the world in places like Afghanistan, Iran and Syria.

"If you believe the Defense Department, (and Defense Secretary Leon) Panetta, we're destroying the finest military in the world at a time when we need it most," said Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C. "I can't explain it. It is beyond my ability to explain it to people."
