MIT review says school didn't target Aaron Swartz

(AP) ? The Massachusetts Institute of Technology didn't seek the federal prosecution of free-information activist Aaron Swartz and remained neutral throughout his legal case, according to an internal review of the school's actions.

The 26-year-old hanged himself in January as he faced a trial in Boston following allegations that he surreptitiously used MIT's network to download millions of articles from a scholarly archive with the goal of making them freely available.

But Swartz's father, Robert, said in a statement Tuesday that the report showed MIT wasn't neutral and "played a central role in Aaron's suicide."

He said the school favored the prosecution by providing access to witnesses that the defense didn't get and by handing over information without subpoenas.

Aaron Swartz had been facing 13 felony charges and decades behind bars when he committed suicide in New York City, and supporters said the case was weighing heavily on him at the time.

Prosecutors defended their actions after his death and said they hadn't been seeking maximum penalties against Swartz. His lawyer had said prosecutors offered a plea deal where he would have to admit to 13 felonies and spend four to six months in prison, but Swartz didn't want to be labeled as a felon.

U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz described the case at one point by saying "stealing is stealing, whether you use a computer command or a crowbar." After his suicide, she extended sympathy to Swartz' loved ones while continuing to defend the charges.

In the aftermath, friends and supporters suggested MIT wrongly assisted federal prosecutors.

"If the university had said publicly, 'we don't want this prosecution to go forward' there would have been no case and Aaron would be alive today," said a statement Tuesday from activist group Demand Progress, which Swartz once led as executive director.

Swartz was viewed as a leader in a movement to make information available on the Internet for free. He helped develop the social news site Reddit in its early years and helped create RSS, a technology for bringing together content from blogs, podcasts and other outlets without visiting websites one by one.

Swartz was not an MIT student. His father is a consultant to the school and Swartz had various informal connections to it.

MIT's review panel raised concerns about policies and procedures but university President L. Rafael Reif said it made clear that the school didn't target Swartz, didn't seek his federal prosecution and didn't oppose a plea bargain. It found no wrongdoing on the school's part.

Hal Abelson, the MIT computer science and engineering professor who headed the inquiry, said Tuesday that MIT never made statements supporting the prosecution or the defense and never weighed in on potential punishments for Swartz. He said the university also declined to intervene with the U.S. attorney's office on Swartz's behalf after his family asked the school to do so.

The professor said the panel found MIT didn't intentionally involve federal officials in the investigation. The Secret Service came with Cambridge police when MIT police asked for help after a laptop was found in a computer wiring closet, he said.

The professor also said during a conference call with reporters that officials worked as an independent review panel while analyzing the school's involvement and "did not attempt to be judgmental."

While critical of the school's actions, Robert Swartz said he was encouraged by Reif's "desire to ensure that something positive comes of the terrible, tragic situation in which Aaron found himself."

The father, who said at his son's funeral that he was "killed by the government," also applauded the university for "its commitment to self-examination." He asked to be involved in MIT community discussions to explore subjects that arose because of his son's case.

Swartz's girlfriend, Taren Stinebrickner-Kauffman, called MIT's report a "whitewash" and said its behavior was "reprehensible." She said MIT's lawyers gave prosecutors total access to witnesses and evidence but refused to do the same for Swartz's lawyers.

MIT's president said the school's decisions were "made in good faith."

The authors of the 182-page report concluded that MIT missed an opportunity to demonstrate leadership.

MIT "is respected for world-class work in information technology, for promoting open access to online information, and for dealing wisely with the risks for computer abuse," it said.

While university didn't do anything wrong, it had nothing to be proud about either, the panel concluded.

Browns OL Ryan Miller sustains scary concussion

BEREA, Ohio (AP) ? As Ryan Miller lay motionless on the ground, shock and then fear spread through the Browns practice.

A few players near the spot where the backup offensive lineman went down dropped to a knee in prayer. The music system was turned off. All talking stopped and an eerie quiet filled Cleveland's indoor field house.

Suddenly, a routine day at training camp was anything but.

"Anytime your brother goes down it's scary," linebacker Quentin Groves said, "because you never know. ... We're just big men that play a sport called football. But we still have hearts. We still have emotions. We still have feelings. He's our brother."

Miller sustained a concussion during a one-on-one blocking drill Saturday, an injury that shook his teammates, who were later relieved to learn that the 6-foot-7, 320-pounder had been released from the Cleveland Clinic. Until getting word that Miller had movement in his extremities and was responsive, several of the Browns were worried Miller may have suffered a devastating injury.

"It's always tough to see your fellow linemen or one of your teammates go down like that," Pro Bowl tackle Joe Thomas said. "It's hard because obviously there are things more important than football and your health is certainly one of them. Sometimes it's hard to get back and focused on football when you see a guy laying there and not moving."

Miller, who is in his second NFL season, was immobilized, strapped to a backboard and taken by ambulance to the hospital after he was hurt. He spent several hours undergoing tests before he was released.

"He's doing well," first-year coach Rob Chudzinski said following practice. "He's responsive and it sounds like things are better at this point."

The Browns were about 40 minutes into their third practice, which was moved indoors because of rain and closed to the public, when Miller got hurt. He crumpled to the field and appeared to be unconscious on his back while most of teammates, who were unaware that he had been hurt, continued to take part in drills.

Groves realized something was seriously wrong and began alerting anyone he could.

"The way he was laying down, you know it was that serious," he said.

Moments after medical personnel rushed to aid the unmoving Miller, Chudzinski came over to check on him along with linebacker D'Qwell Jackson and others. After Miller was immobilized and strapped to a backboard, the entire Browns team and coaching staff huddled around him in prayer.

"We got together," said Chudzinski, Cleveland's first-year coach. "We said a prayer, said we would keep Ryan in our thoughts and I would give them updates as we got them. We needed to get back to work at that point and focus back on practice."

It was difficult for everyone.

The Browns asked media members not to report Miller's name until his family could be contacted, raising fears he was hurt more severely. And, as Miller was being treated, the team also requested for cameras be turned off to protect his privacy.

Meanwhile, Miller's teammates were hoping for the best.

"We play this game so hard, so violent," Groves said. "Any moment, this game could be taken away, and that's the thing I want guys to learn from this. Cherish the moments while you're out here. Cherish tying your cleats up. Cherish the smell of the grass. Cherish snapping that chinstrap on because any moment it can be taken away from you."

Chudzinski did not see how Miller got hurt, but Thomas said it was the result of helmet-to-helmet contact. It was not immediately known what defensive player Miller was blocking when he went down.

"Two helmets kind of hit the wrong way," he said. "It was kind of a freak thing."

After Miller was wheeled from the building, Chudzinski huddled his players and promised to give them an update when he got one. And about an hour later he got the news that the 24-year-old was "alert and awake."

"Anytime that happens you just pray and just hope for the best and hope everything is OK," Jackson said. "Coach gave us word that he is fine and that's a good thing. But those are the challenges and the scares that when you sign up for the game there's a possibility of something like that happening. I'll tell you what, it made everyone realize that at any moment anything can happen."

Chudzinski was proud of the way his team handled the difficult event.

"I thought they did a great job," he said. "It really says a lot about them, our coaches, our staff and our players to be able to do that. This team is a family and when something happens to a family member like that, it's tough. These guys did a great job of staying focused and getting a lot of work done that we needed to get done."

Miller was drafted by the Browns in the fifth round in 2012 out of Colorado. He appeared in eight games as a rookie, and got extended time in the fourth quarter of the season finale at Pittsburgh after John Greco sustained a knee injury. He was a four-year letter winner at Colorado, setting a school record with 48 career starts. He missed just two offensive plays over his final three seasons.

Thomas, who has become close to Miller, was thrilled to hear he was doing better.

"When we heard it was not neck-related, that was fantastic news and you feel great about that," he said. "He's a nice guy. He's real easygoing. He's a hard worker. He's really kind of a gym-rat type guy and him and I have become good friends in the last year for sure."

NOTES: DT Phil Taylor (calf strain) and TE Kellen Davis (knee strain) returned to practice on a limited basis. Taylor took part in individual drills and was held out of team sessions. ... OL Oneil Cousins will miss a "couple weeks" with a sprained ankle, Chudzinski said. ... The Browns will be in full pads for the first time Sunday. ... The Browns did some extensive work on screen passes, a staple of Chudzinski's offense.

Kidd Kraddick Dies at a Charity Golf Tournament

Kidd Kraddick, who hosted the Dallas-based, nationally syndicated radio show Kidd Kraddick in the Morning, died yesterday in New Orleans. He was there for a fundraiser golf tournament for his Kidd's Kids charity. Kraddick started the day on the course but felt too ill to get past the first hole. The cause of his death has not been released.

Late last night, Kraddick's publicist released a statement on the Kidd Nation web site:

All of us with YEA Networks and the Kidd Kraddick in the Morning crew are heartbroken over the loss of our dear friend and leader. Kidd devoted his life to making people smile every morning, and for 21 years his foundation has been dedicated to bringing joy to thousands of chronically and terminally ill children.

Kidd passed away today in New Orleans at a golf tournament organized to raise money for his beloved Kidd's Kids charity. He died doing what he loved, and his final day was spent selflessly focused on those special children that meant the world to him.

We ask that you respect the privacy of his family and his colleagues. At the appropriate time, we will release more information about the cause of death.

Kraddick has been on the air in DFW for nearly 30 years. His morning show on Kiss-FM (106.1) was nationally syndicated in 2001. His home radio station also posted a brief message, saying, "All of us at KISS-FM, ClearChannel Dallas, affiliated Clear Channel stations and markets, YEA Networks, and the Kidd Kraddick in the Morning crew are heartbroken over the loss of our dear friend and leader."

The station has been paying tribute to its loudest voice and most visible face since last night -- right now they're taking calls from listeners. As I type this, they're playing "I'll Be Missing You" by Puff Daddy and Faith Evans. Listen here.

Normal sibling aggression is not so normal | Dayton Children's Blog

During my typical clinical interview with parents, I always ask about sibling interactions and usually get an answer like this. ?They argue and fight all the time but it?s just normal sibling stuff.?

I?ve never quite understood that response. How can fighting, name calling, and intimidation be acceptable at home but be labeled as bullying and harmful if those same behaviors occur with non-family members?? The thinking that because sibling aggression is common that it is also normal just never made sense to me.

Recent research published in the June, 2013 issue of Pediatrics found that aggression among siblings is not as benign as most parents would believe. Researchers studied the impact of verbal and physical aggression among siblings and found that the negative impact on kids? mental health was virtually identical to that of such aggression among non-family members.

I can understand the reluctance of parents to intervene whenever their children get into disagreements. Kids need to learn how to navigate such problems on their own, without the constant intervention of parents. However, your job as parents is to teach kids how to resolve such disagreements without name calling, bullying or fighting.

?

1. Make your rules very clear and specific. I suggest that parents of young children make out a list of words and behaviors that will not be tolerated in their family. Try this as a simple guideline. If you wouldn?t want your child to use such words outside your house, then don?t allow them to use the same words within your family.

?

2. Coach kids how to solve their own problems. This stuff doesn?t come easily or naturally, either for adults or children. This means helping youngsters understand the world from another?s viewpoint, which admittedly can be rather challenging! Most kids think in terms of winning or losing, not compromising.

Teach kids about self-control, and learning strategies to relax, get control of their emotions, and think of lots of possible different solutions to a problem. This takes some time, so don?t get discouraged if your youngster or teen gets emotional or argumentative. These can be among the most valuable life skills your child learns from you.

Explain this as a very simple four-step process?-define the problem, list alternatives, discuss the pros and cons of each, and arrive at a plan. Whether dealing with a toddler or teen, keep coaching your child through the same four steps.

3. Don?t tolerate bad behavior.? Aggression among siblings is one of the easiest problems to stop. It ends when parents decide that it is not acceptable in their family, and they punish that behavior every time it occurs. Within two weeks, the problem disappears.

You?ll be pleasantly surprised with the impact on your family when you decide to stop tolerating bad behavior among your children.

Homeland Security Is Moving Into an Abandoned Insane Asylum

Did you know that the US government's third-largest agency is ramping up a 20-year, $4.5 billion construction project that will turn the grounds of a former mental hospital into an "elaborate" headquarters for its sprawling network of agencies? It's already a decade behind schedule and $1 billion over budget.

Los Angeles schools to issue iPads to all students - Tony Bates

Listen with webReader

LA Watts-LACMA

Weiss, T. (2013) Los Angeles plans to give 640,000 students free iPads, CITE World, July 25

I don?t normally cover k-12 developments, but this one seems pretty significant. Los Angeles Unified School District, the second largest in the USA, will hand out to students?31,000 free?iPads?in September?under a new $30 million program launched by the district. The plan is that all 640,000 students in the LAUSD will receive their own iPad by 2014.

Initial focus is on the digital divide?

Mark Hovatter, the chief facilities executive for the LAUSD, reported:

?We?re targeting kids who most likely don?t have their own computers or laptops or iPads. Their only exposure to computers now is going to be in their schools. We started in schools in neighborhoods where kids didn?t have that much exposure to computers in the past.??

Pre-loaded content

Each student is receiving an iPad pre-loaded with educational applications and other programs that will be used by the students in their studies.

The rationale

1. Tech-ready workers

?The most important thing is to try to prepare the kids for the technology they are going to face when they are going to graduate?.Workers today in every field, including construction and automotive education, require skills with computers and related technologies, said Hovatter. ?We are making sure that everyone is able to take a test electronically. Even in construction, you can?t do those jobs now without having some familiarity with computers. Whatever jobs kids want to have, technology is likely involved. You?re just not going to be able to do well in society if you don?t have some experience?

2. More interactive learning experience

Using the iPads, students and their teachers can better plan and synchronize scheduling, share reference videos and news events, use interactive lessons, and conduct digital reading tests that can be adjusted based on each student?s performance and reading levels.

3. Access to e-textbooks

digital textbooks will be delivered to the iPads through an arrangement with educational books publisher?Pearson. Students will also be able to read other books for class assignments using the devices. The digital books also will help the district save money over buying traditional paper-based textbooks, but that wasn?t a main goal of the project.

Comment

These are early days, and the $30 million covers only the first 31,000 tablets. The article and other press releases say nothing about teacher preparation, which from past experience will be critical for success. So lots could go wrong.

Nevertheless, university and college instructors should ask themselves: ?Am I ready to teach students who will arrive tech savvy and expecting me to teach in a tech savvy way?? It won?t be long before all our students will expect this ? if not already.

Thanks to Richard Pinet for directing me to this.

Rugby Union: Guscott - Lancaster must be tough

Former England centre Jeremy Guscott has called on Stuart Lancaster to become more ruthless in his squad selections.

Guscott - Lancaster must be tough

The coach has had a fairly comfortable time since taking over the side in the latter months of 2011 but things are about to become tougher with the World Cup now two years away.
Lancaster was previously widely praised for picking form players but now faces a number of selection dilemmas, as he looks to build a team capable of winning the world title.
A number of youngsters emerged on the recent tour of South America, but those players only really got their chance due to the absence of a host of regular members of the squad who were on duty with the British & Irish Lions.
It means there are sure to be a number of huge question marks going into the Autumn Internationals and Guscott says Lancaster cannot afford to hesitate when picking who he thinks can star at the World Cup.
"Stuart Lancaster must know by now that the biggest job he has as England head coach is selection," he wrote in the Rugby Paper. "England are two years away from the 2015 World Cup, with only another 20 or so international games left to get themselves in a position to win it.
"That challenge will test Lancaster's selection skills to the full. Above all, he has to make the right choices - and bear in mind that 12 months can be a long time in international rugby."

Textbook publishers revamp ebooks to fight used market

A booming market in recent years for selling and renting used college textbooks has saved students across the United States a ton of cash.

But it has put textbook publishers in a bind. They don't make a cent unless students buy their books new.

So increasingly, publishers like Pearson and McGraw-Hill Education are turning to a new model: Creating online versions of their texts, often loaded with interactive features, and selling students access codes that expire at semester's end.

Publishers save on printing, shipping and process returns. The ebooks are good for learning and good for their bottom line. There's just one catch: Persuading students to go digital isn't easy.

Online products accounted for 27 percent of the $12.4 billion spent on textbooks for secondary schools and colleges in the United States last year, according to research firm Outsell.

But the publishers expect that percentage to grow, and are retooling their businesses to compete in what they see as the future of the industry.

Half of Pearson's total revenue last year came from digital products and services (not all of which are digital), and executives expect that to increase. The company recently announced a restructuring to emphasize online content.

Cengage Learning, which creates customized courses, has pledged to emerge from a recent bankruptcy filing more focused on digital. McGraw-Hill Education, which was recently acquired by private equity firm Apollo Global Management, has taken an equity stake in one software company focused on digital learning and purchased another outright.

Still, the transition will not be immediate, executives said. Students have to learn to adapt to a textbook that can almost read their minds.

"How do we get from the Old World to the New World as quickly as possible?" said Andrew Kvaal, a senior vice president for Cengage. "An awful lot of people still resonate with having a physical book in front of them."

Some 77 percent of college students said they preferred print to e-books in a survey conducted last year by the National Association of College Stores. Another survey, by the research firm Student Monitor, found only 14 percent of students enrolled in college this past spring had classes that required online texts and just 2 percent bought most of their books in digital format.

And most students said they did not see much use for the touted special features of digital textbooks, such as embedded quizzes, electronic flash cards, or the ability to share notes online.

Michael Hardison, who is studying political science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, is among the skeptics. He likes straight-forward e-books, but said textbook software with built-in tutorials made him feel that he was being spoon-fed the information instead of letting him wrestle with the material on his own.

Cost is another concern for many students.

Consider the widely used textbook, "Biology", by Sylvia Mader and Michael Windelspecht, published by McGraw-Hill. The ebook costs $120, a steep discount from the $229 cost for a new print textbook.

But savvy shoppers do better. The same book in printed form can be rented for $36. It can also be bought used for $102, and later resold on the secondhand market for up to $95, according to the website CheapestTextbooks.com.

These alternative markets have transformed the industry. Average student spending on new textbooks per semester dropped from $192 in the fall of 2008 to $138 this spring, according to Student Monitor. That is despite the prices of new textbooks rising about 6 percent a year, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Digital textbooks could hurt the secondhand market, analysts said. But they will have to contend with open-source sites ? free or almost-free compilations of resources that are only a small threat now ? and students sharing files rather than buying their own.

With online books, publishing companies "get a steady stream of revenue," said Will Ethridge, the outgoing chief executive of Pearson's North America division. "It's a better model for students, a better model for the business and a better model for the environment."

The transition "obviously doesn't happen overnight," he said, "but we do think the direction is very clear."

Executives say students might be wary at first, but once they try the new software, they are hooked.

McGraw-Hill's LearnSmart software ? which serves almost as a personal tutor, guiding students through e-books ? debuted in 2010 with just 150,000 student users. Two years later, more than a million students were paying $25 to $35 per course to access the online tutor, which they purchase separately from the online textbook itself. Executives say sales are expected to rise again this year.

Some digital texts embed links to videos, articles and clips from a professor's lectures, while others will monitor a student's progress and draw up personalized study plans to keep them on track.

"We can even predict what you're most likely to forget ... and when you're most likely to forget it," said Jeff Livingston, a senior vice president at McGraw-Hill Education.

Manju Bhat, an assistant professor of physiology at Winston-Salem State University in North Carolina, monitors how much time his students spend reading the digital texts he assigns, how they do on embedded quizzes, and which concepts stump them. Bhat, a paid consultant to McGraw-Hill, uses that data to shape the next day's lesson.

The students' grades improved so much that "My department chairwoman called me into her office and asked me, 'What did you do?'" Bhat said.

There is another advantage of online texts: They can be edited and updated quickly, with new material pushed out to all users around the world.

"Ten years from now, almost 75 percent of students believe that e-textbooks will be used more than print textbooks," said Cindy Clarke, a senior vice president for CourseSmart, an online joint venture of five textbook publishers. "It's happening, and I believe it will start to happen more and more exponentially."

The Chevy Volt Sales Figures are on Fire! - John Ransom ...

Editor?s note: John Ransom, against the advice of those close to him, saw fit to escape for a brief vacation. As you are reading this, John is trying his best to enjoy a cruise on the now infamous Carnival Cruise Lines. Below is what can best be described as a ?Best of? article. (Although, that description is only being used for the sake of brevity.)

Once our illustrious Townhall Finance Editor has his cruise ship towed into the harbor, he will be back with fresh content and mildly intriguing articles. In the meantime, check out our other top-notch contributors such as Daniel J Mitchell, Mike Shedlock, or ? if you can bear it ? feel free to read my commentary. Thanks for reading! And let not your heart be troubled, John will be back shortly. (We wouldn?t allow him to leave for any extended period of time.)

- Michael Schaus, Associate Editor for Townhall Finance

The good news for GM these days is that no one has been consumed in a fiery death due to engine compartment fires since the Chevy Volt was discovered to spontaneous combust after accidents shortly after production began.

The bad news for the company is that while Chevy Volt sales in June set a record, prior to June their sales for 2013 sucked despite general auto sales setting post-crash records.

?With signs that sales of its Chevrolet Volt battery car could be coming unplugged,? reported?NBC News?in June, ?General Motors is offering potential buyers as much as $5,000 in incentives ? making it the latest maker to try to cut prices in a bid to boost lagging demand for electric vehicles.?

In June the company reported 2,698 Volts sold thanks to those drastic discounts by GM. In fact, all battery-powered cars have seen deep price cuts due to disappointing sales.

?For the first five months of this year,? said NBC News, ?GM has sold only 7,157 of what it prefers to call an extended-range electric vehicle, or E-REV. May sales, in particular, fell 4.3 percent, to 1,607. By comparison, the overall U.S. automotive market was up 8.2 percent for the month. According to a report by Inside EVs, Chevy dealers have more than 9,000 Volts clogging inventories, vehicles they need to clear out before the 2014 models start rolling in.?

Nevada Wildfire Could Snuff Out A Rare Butterfly

The Mt. Charleston blue butterfly is a rare species found only in a few small areas high up in Nevada's Spring Mountains.

The Mt. Charleston blue butterfly is a rare species found only in a few small areas high up in Nevada's Spring Mountains.

Corey Kallstrom/USFWS

A big wildfire in a mountain range just west of Las Vegas has put at risk the Mt. Charleston blue butterfly, a rare species found in the U.S.

The fire is dying down, but it may be weeks before experts can get to the remarkable area where this butterfly lives to see if it made it through.

? You have a species that has evolved to be dependent on fire that may be exterminated by fire.

There are few examples of fires wiping a species off the planet. In fact, fires sometimes help rare animals and plants by clearing overgrown habitat. But experts fear that such extinctions could become a consequence of two factors that are making some endangered species increasingly vulnerable: the loss of habitat and climate change.

The Mt. Charleston blue butterfly, a tiny insect about the size of a quarter, is found in a couple small patches high in southern Nevada's Spring Mountains. These mountains are known as a sky island ecosystem, because its relatively cool and wet climate provides homes to a much greater diversity of animals and plants than the arid lands that surround it.

"This mountain island in the middle of the desert [has] been isolated for the last 10,000 years," says Corey Kallstrom, an endangered species expert for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. "Because of that isolation, unique species have developed in that area."

The Mt. Charleston blue butterfly is found no where else on earth. A large wild fire that's burned through the region for most of this month came close to the main area where this tiny butterfly has been spotted in recent years, according to Kallstrom, and he's worried about their fate.

"I'm hopeful that there have been some that have survived," Kallstrom says.

Smoke billows from the Carpenter 1 fire in the Spring Mountains range of Nevada on July 5. As of June 23, more than 27,000 acres have burned.

Ethan Miller/Getty Images

The butterfly's key habitat is in rugged terrain that's a several-hours hike up into the mountains. Kallstrom has been trained in forest fire safety, but even he's not allowed in to check on the butterfly ? yet.

"It's too unsafe to put anyone up there on the ground to look," he says. "We'll just have to wait and see when we get up there."

Ironically, the Mt. Charleston blue butterfly is dependent on wildfires. For thousands of years, fire cleared out the trees and opened up habitat for the small plants that the butterfly feeds on. But for several decades, people have been fighting fires here, and elsewhere in the West. The plants the butterfly needs can't grow in forests.

"It's decades of fire suppression in the Mt. Charleston area that have caused the trees to overgrow places where this butterfly used to occur, which has boxed it into a few canyons where it's still hanging on," says Dan Rubinoff, professor of entomology at the University of Hawaii.

Rubinoff, who has been following the Mt. Charleston blue's story from afar, called it a "sad irony."

"You have a species that has evolved to be dependent on fire that may be exterminated by fire," he says.

But Rubinoff says this story could end in a happier way. If the butterfly survives, it could have more habitat available to it in the future.

"If this fire didn't wipe out the butterfly, the fire will actually provide a lot more habitat for the milk vetch that the butterfly needs in the future," Rubinoff says. "So if the butterfly is still around, that fire might end up being a net gain for the butterfly."

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says in the past, fires have benefited endangered plants, fish and insects by restoring habitat that had been overgrown with invasive species or because of fire suppression.

A spokeswoman for the agency says they couldn't come up with any species that have gone extinct because of fires.

But there was a bird that lived on an island off California, the Santa Barbara song sparrow, which was never seen again after an intense fire in 1959. The federal government now considers it extinct.

Like the Mt. Charleston blue butterfly, much of the Santa Barbara song sparrow's historic habitat had already been eliminated. Experts like Rubinoff say habitat reduction is one reason we may start to hear about species going extinct due to wildfires.

"I think that's going to be something that comes more and more now as species ranges are restricted more and more," Rubinoff says.

Another reason species may be more vulnerable to extinction is climate change. It is making wildfires more common or intense. It's also putting other stresses on rare native animals and plants, such as increasing droughts and invasive plants and pests.

Isolated animals, like the Mt. Charleston blue butterfly, are especially vulnerable because they may not be able to flee their range. Rubinoff sees them as the canaries in a coal mine. They show the risks global warming will present to many other species in the future.

"This butterfly is telling us that things are changing in a way they have not changed before," Rubinoff says. "And if we can save things like the Mt. Charleston blue, in the process of saving them, we may be saving ourselves."

Freeview hit with 'major technical issues' on Sony DVD recorders after update

Freeview hit with 'major technical issues' on Sony DVD recorders after update

If Freeview is down on your Sony device in the UK, don't worry: you're not alone. Sony has tweeted that the service isn't working on many of its DVD recorders, like the RDR-HXD870, following a recent firmware update. The company said that "it appears something has change(d) in the way these devices are receiving EPG data from (Freeview operator) Arqiva," adding that some Pioneer DVD players are also affected. It's still trying to get to the bottom of the issue, but pointed to several temporary fixes on its community forums that might tide you over (check the More Coverage link). If that doesn't do it, you'll have to wait for new firmware or get your TV fix elsewhere.

hollister The Secret to Building a Profitable List - NSC Web ...

The idea of the above is to protect my work AND to gain a paying customer to my list. 99% of people will not have a problem with any of the above. I?ve actually never had anyone question it personally. If you wish to build a profitable list then selling a product (for a cheap price) is the way to go.

The secret to selling cheap products to build a profitable list is all in the back end systems you have set up. With a good back end newsletter, one time offer or future blog posts then hollister you should be well on your way to building the list you?ve dreamed of, one that brings in money.

A personal favourite I use to build my list of paying customers is to make people subscribe to my list after buying a product before they can download it. Before you shout that?s unethical let me give you a few reasons why.

The best list to have www.dmvtabs.com however, is a list of paying customers. Anyone can build a list of thousands of freebie seekers quite easily but how do you know they will spend any money on your products if they are known to have opted in Mulberry Outlet wanting the free stuff?

Chris Williams has been using these list building techniques to boost his internet marketing business online. His hollister new site teaches marketers simple and effective ways how to build a profitable list in any niche they choose.

With the current crazy of seven dollar products sweeping the IM world, a lot of people are asking if this is devaluing their products. Personally I would rather sell a report for a dollar rather than give it away for free. This at least shows that abercrombie milano the person who has joined your list is at least able to spend some money even if it is a small amount.

Most of the different forms of list building are common knowledge for anyone who participates louboutin soldes in internet marketing. The usual way as stated above is to give away a free eBook, report or louboutin newsletter to people who subscribe to your list.

3. I ALWAYS have a support desk linked on to my sites. If hollister someone for some reason doesn?t want to sign up and get the password, they can spend two minutes submitting a ticket and they will be sent one straight away.

1. I password protect my downloads. Piracy is rife on the internet and what little measures there are to eliminate it will never work fully. Rather than password protecting the PDF eBook or report, I password protect the .zip file. Whist this won?t stop file sharing, it will stop people downloading my products straight from my website without paying.

2. Even thought it makes the customer jump through another hoop so to speak, there is www.searchforthesoul.org always the option to un-subscribe in every email I send out. The customer can sign up, confirm their louboutin pas cher subscription and get the password and then un-subscribe forever.

In any form of business on the internet you need to capture the names and emails of the people who either buy from you or who are interested in your product. This is known as list building. Most people?s lists are built by using a simple email capture form on their abercrombie websites often giving away a free report or newsletter to entice people to subscribe to their list.

Most people who sell a product ( if they are savy enough) will put an email capture on their product?s thank you or download page. They may offer free updates or special bonuses for signing up from that page. Whilst you are offering something for free, you are also capturing the email of a Mulberry paying customer.

8 Ways to be cool & be happy despite a heat wave | Care2 Healthy ...

Green Divas are keeping cool and having fun in the Toyota MPG Challenge*

I?m not sure what the temperature is where you are, but here in New Jersey we are experiencing a string of seriously steamy days that makes going out the door feel more like walking into a sauna. Everyone seems a little cranky and we are all getting weary from talk of the weather and idiotic posts on Facebook about popped corn and God cooking NJ (yes, I am guilty of sharing both of these, because they made me LOL at a weak moment and I just couldn?t help myself).

Despite the lack of cool air in the studio (thank you Mercury Retrograde and failed central air!), we had a wonderful show and now I know we can be cool and have fun regardless of the high temperatures.

Listen to the whole podcast . . .
Here are some things I learned about staying cool in a stinky LONG heat wave

  1. Find Balance ? I?m currently driving a fabulous Toyota Prius Plug-in in a 30-day MPG Challenge for charity. There are several of us in the New York metro area trying to get the highest average MPGe to win money for our chosen charities ? my charity is Eleventh Hour Rescue. They saved my gorgeous girl Gracie and I?m seriously motivated to win. So, I got it in my head that driving without air conditioning was necessary. That lasted for about 5 minutes on the hot highway, midday in the severe heat we?ve been having. I know opening the windows lowers MPG from drag, but I began alternating between having the AC on, recycling the air as long as possible, then opening the windows, which is when I discovered that this was probably what it would feel like to be in a windy sauna. There was NO relief without the AC. Sorry Eleventh Hour. I?m doing my best not to have heat stroke while driving and remain hopeful that my competitors aren?t any more stoic than me about driving in this heat!
  2. ?

  3. Stay Hydrated ? I seem to get dehydrated quickly without even knowing it! I try to drink more fresh, clean and cool water and less of my beloved tea, which tends to ultimately dehydrate from the caffeine. I?m very lucky to have an extraordinary water filtration system installed in my home by Pur2o, so I can fill up my glass or stainless steel bottles and keep hydrated on the road.

GD Meg's Gazpacho in an Upcycled Salsa Jar

  4. ?

  5. Eat Fresh & Healthy ? I have been making gazpacho and keeping a cold batch at the ready in the refrigerator. Some of the herbs and veggies come from my garden, but I got to visit my town?s farmer?s market (it was already 90 degrees in the shade @ 9am!) to get more fresh supplies. I?ve also been making fresh organic fruit salad and keeping that on-hand as well. It is refreshing, cooling and healthy. Green Dude Eco Ed did a great segment on why eating local is so important. Please listen to this short podcast
  6. Keep a Sense of Humor ? Being silly and having fun can help me get through a lot, hence the homage to Freddie Mercury and Wayne?s World in the video above. *it is important to play safe, so I want to be clear, we were driving literally 5 miles per hour around my very sleepy block.

Silly stuff in the GD studio - not necessarily GD philosophy

  7. Keep an Eye on Family, Friends & Neighbors who may be at Risk in Extreme Heat - Not everyone has air conditioning and even if they do, people with health conditions as well as the elderly could be at risk or may not be able to get out to get food or medications. Please pay extra attention to those who may need assistance ? hey, it?s just another great reason to visit.
  8. Play Fun Indoor Games ? Maybe create a fun indoor picnic and getting out the family?s favorite board games for a special hot day/fun day full of activities for safe, cool fun.
  9. Don?t be Bugged by Bugs ? It?s great to get outside in the evening even if it is still 90 degrees, but those bugs can be pretty pesky if not downright annoying. Green Diva Mizar shared a great, effective non-toxic but repellent recipe with us this week on the Green Divas website. Here?s a quick podcast of the DIY segment where she describes it:
  10. Listen to Your Favorite Uplifting, Inspiring & Fun Podcast! Ok, so here?s a fairly shameless plug . . . Aside from the Green Divas Radio Show, Green Diva Studio is now producing an inspiring podcast series by actress and storyteller, Kristin Ace called Good Vibrations with Kristin. Hope you will lift your vibrations with Kristin, and of course the latest Green Divas Radio Show podcast:

Loki reigns over Marvel Studios Comic-Con panel

(AP) ? Thor's evil brother, Loki, took over the Marvel Studios presentation at Comic-Con on Saturday.

Lights flashed inside the San Diego Convention Center's largest exhibition hall, and Tom Hiddleston, dressed as Loki, commanded the stage. He called Hall H "a meager palace of Midgard" before showing footage from "Thor: The Dark World."

It opened with an epic battle scene, in which Thor takes down a massive monster, reducing him to a pile of rubble with one swing of his hammer.

The cast of "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" shared footage from that film. It also opened with a dynamic fight scene: Captain America battling a dozen assailants in a glass elevator.

Other highlights included the introduction of the "Guardians of the Galaxy" cast, which includes Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana and Djimon Honsou.

Mixed martial-artist Dave Bautista said he fought hard for the role of Drax.

"It's something I wanted more than anything I've ever wanted in my life," the tattooed bodybuilder said. "When I got the job, I broke down and cried like a little baby."

"Avengers" director Joss Whedon made a surprise appearance at the panel, where he offered an early look at the sequel.

A teaser trailer for "Avengers: Age of Ultron" ended with an image of the title character.

Kevin Feige, head of Marvel Studios, says "Guardians" is the company's attempt to push the Marvel cinematic universe in new directions beyond "The Avengers" franchise that might not be familiar to the casual fan. The film takes place on the other side of the universe, for the most part, he says, and features non-humanoid characters that will require computer-generated images to pull off.

"It's a very important movie for us for expanding the definition of what a Marvel Studios movie can be the way 'Iron Man' 1 was a very important movie for us," Feige said in an interview earlier Saturday.

"People didn't know if Marvel could do it by themselves. They didn't know if Iron Man was an A-list character. People called Iron Man a B-list character then. We had a lot to prove there. With 'Guardians' they don't call it anything because they don't know what the heck it is. There's very little recognition. It's got its own fan base as all the titles do, but that's not why we're making it. We're making it because we want to do something very different."

Thanks, Bubble_Tea. I just wrote a series of three posts on how Jersey City became my home (I'm not a native):

How I Found a Home in Jersey City and Got Steve Fulop Elected Mayor, Part 1

How I Found a Home in Jersey City and Got Steve Fulop Elected Mayor, Part 2

How I Found a Home in Jersey City and Got Steve Fulop Elected Mayor, Part 3

Don't let the send part of that title fool you. Yes, I DID vote for him, and, no, I'm not delusional. But there's a point there.

I started this thread back in August 2011 by linking to this crazy-ass report: Jersey City: A Skate Park to the World. It was crazy when I wrote it back in October of 2007, but sometimes you just have to sketch out a dream to see what it looks like. Back then New York's High Line was just a concept and the Mana Contemporary complex in Journal Square didn't exist.

Things have changed. Mana Contemporary continues to grow and plans to put a hotel in their complex. No sane person would put a hotel there. But they're visionaries and they seem to have enough money to pay for implementing their visions. What they're doing will draw tourists to Jersey City and raise property values.

And they're only 5 or 6 blocks from where I proposed a hotel in that report. What they're planning to do makes the various projects in that report more plausible. When they've got their hotel open for business, let's re-evaluate that report and see how things look.

Oh, and we've got a new administration. Things change.

National Sporting Goods Association, 2008 report:

MOUNT PROSPECT, IL ? Among sports and recreation activities that grew more than 15% the past 10 years, skateboarding led the way with a 74.1% growth, according to the National Sporting Goods Association (NSGA). Data contained in NSGA?s annual ?Sports Participation ? Series I and II? reports, which are now available, shows skateboarding grew from 5.8 million to 10.1 million participants between 1998 and 2007. Target shooting had the second highest 10-year growth, 63.3% to 20.9 million participants.

Other sports and recreation activities showing more than 15% growth over the 10-year period included snowboarding (41.7% to 5.1 million participants); running/jogging (40.1% to 30.4 million participants); archery target shooting (37.5% to 6.6 million participants); workout at club (27.5% to 33.8 million participants); motor/power boating (24.1% to 31.9 million participants); muzzleloading (16.1% to 3.6 million participants); and exercise walking (15.6% to 89.8 million participants).

?Skateboarding saw a remarkable increase in the last 10 years, due in part, to the television exposure provided by ESPN?s X-Games,? said NSGA Vice President of Information & Research Thomas B. Doyle. ?Much of that increase came at the expense of inline skating, which saw a decline of 60.4% (to 10.7 million) during the same period. In the 1990s, during inline skating?s peak growth period, skateboarding suffered similarly.? In 1998, there were 27.0 million inline skaters.

Said the genius who called all his customers at Taqueria "classless". It would probably be a good idea for you to keep your mouth shut and make some tacos.

The city slipped a skate park into the plan for Berry Lane at the last minute but the neighborhood shot it down at community meetings because it wasn't within the design specs had been the community had settled on four years ago during a design charette.

So, the city was planning to spend money on a skate park. They can easily plan to put it somewhere other than Berry Lane.

Careful, no one have any fun with this guy around. Curmudgeon police alert. I've never seen someone get so angry and worked up about a skate park. If you panic about every potential minor inconvenience, maybe a city is not the best place for you.

What's great is that Vigilante always seems to think that everyone gives a flying f*** about his opinions.
Obviously some people do care about skateboarders (along with other kids of the city).

Cities that invest in their youth attract residents that invest in their city.

So should the city build one downtown and one in the Heights? I like golf so I would like a golf course downtown. How about Bacci and horseshoes and croquet and polo? We need a cricket grounds before most of those things. Good luck.

I'll be honest, I think when a city gets behind a skatepark it's more about focusing the energy of the skaters. Unfortunately skateboarders are seen as a nuisance to many companies and citizens because when there isn't a central area for them to skate, they'll skate everywhere.
I used to skate all the time, and in cities where there was a skatepark, the majority of skaters were there (when they weren't skating to/from there). In cities where there wasn't a skatepark, skaters would make do with any area to hang out and skate.

Most cities aren't overrun with young kids running around with their golf clubs hitting balls in front of businesses.

Philadelphia has made a major commitment to skateparks. The Franklin's Paine Skatepark Fund is at the center of it all. Here's their website:

Here's a little history of a 'guerrilla' skate park that some people built on the floor slab of a demolished factory:

http://www.scribd.com/doc/113688794/SK8-Chronicles

When the land was bought up, the slab was destroyed. But the developer hasn't gotten around to developing on the property. Probably got bit by the crash of 2008.

Anyhow, THAT's why the Enos Jones hockey rink got turned into a skate park. The skate boarders wanted to go somewhere, and that's where they went.

@user1111: Having a skate park IS a quality of life issue, one that impacts lots of young adults and families with kids more than 5 or 6 years old.

In case it's not obvious, this photo should clarify the location of the skate park in the previous three photos:

IMG_2659

That's Christ Hospital in the background.

I took those photos in Oct. and Nov. of 2006. The land was sold in 2007 and the developer busted up the concrete slab on which that park had been constructed. But the land remains undeveloped.

The skaters moved to Enos Jones Park and took over the hockey rink.

Go to Hoboken or buy an old warehouse and build one. City doesn't have money to fulfill people's hobbies.

like a bball court or a park?

You can take the bbcourt down if you'd like. If we build a park specific to everyone's hobbies then we'd be pretty stupid. Besides you can actually skate in a park.

so the city can fulfill some people's hobbies, just not others

Exactly. Must I keep repeating it?

ah, so you admit your logic is inconsistent

No. I'm saying you cannot build parks to suit every silly hobby.

which is an entirely unfair and arbitrary policy because it means some hobbies get favors and others don't
