Wrestling notepad: Area rankings - The Sports Desk

Having survived a flood of (mostly positive) feedback, we?re back with a second round of wrestling rankings from what The Free Lance?Star considers the Fredericksburg area.
As always, these rankings are based on results
we?ve culled from track
wrestling.com and by the feedback we?ve received at jrice@freelancestar.com.
There were a few shakeups this week?mostly because of results during the last seven days, and a few because of wrestlers we just missed:

106: 1. Josh Nail, Colonial Forge; 2. D.J. Ahalt, Courtland; 3. Yarhoski Aldiva, Eastern View.
Why? Massaponax?s Michael Rinker was second here, but he lost to Albemarle?s 106-pounder, whom Ahalt has beaten this year. We?re still unsure about Ahalt vs. Aldiva.

113: 1. Bryce Gentry, Colonial Forge; 2. Isaiah Coleman?Combs, Orange; 3. Bryan Ramey, Eastern View.
Honorable mention: No changes in the top three from last week, but Stafford?s Josh Beacorn is on the radar.

120: 1. Josue Beltran, Mountain View; 2. Dylan Hunziker, Colonial Forge; 3. Brett Shurina, Eastern View.

But: Eastern View?s Ramey and Shurina switched weight classes when the Cyclones won last weekend?s Virginia Duals. If they were swapped in the postseason, we think they?d probably be ranked right in the same spots.

126: 1. Dylan Thompson, North Stafford; 2. J.D. Stone, Colonial Forge; 3. Vinny Cafiero, Chancellor.

Still waiting: Our beef with the top spot remains the same: We want to see Thompson and Stone wrestle. (They have no known common opponents this year at this weight.) Cafiero takes No. 3 because he?s beaten Albemarle?s 126-pounder, who beat Mountain View?s Calvin Nerove (last week?s No. 3).

132: 1. Hugh Morris, Orange; 2. Joel Baer, Brooke Point; 3. Curtis Harris, Colonial Forge.

New No. 1: Morris won a close 7?5 match against Harris and moves up to the top spot. Baer has beaten Morris, but was pinned by Harris. Should be a good district tournament weight.

Honorable mention: Chancellor?s Mark Weinstock remains on the radar, and Eastern View?s Kevin Willems has a strong r?sum? (though he was hurt at the Virginia Duals).

138: 1. William Inserra, North Stafford; 2. Nico Dunbar, Colonial Forge; 3. Nick Polzin, Stafford.
Injury exception: Facing Inserra last week, Dunbar was injured and the match wasn?t finished. Colonial Forge?s Daniel May is probably good enough to be in this top three, but must wrestle in more varsity matches first. Polzin has some nice district wins and a close loss against Dunbar.

145: 1. Tony Neis, Colonial Forge; 2. Austin Jenkins, Eastern View; 3. Josh Deutel, Brooke Point.

Change at the bottom: Deutel rolled to a 12?2 win against Orange?s Bruce Schelegel, last week?s No. 3.

152: 1. Sean Murphy, Colonial Forge; 2. Ryan Almond, Orange; 3. Devon Bornschein, Stafford.
Settled, for now: We called it a tossup last week, but Murphy beat Almond 6?1. We missed Bornschein?he should have been No. 3 last week, too.

160: 1. Sean Raftery, Orange; 2. Jared Swan, Mountain View; 3. Mason Woodall, Colonial Forge.
No changes: The most interesting development was Raftery?s overtime loss to Osbourn Park?s 160-pounder. Maybe they?ll meet again in the Northwest Region tournament.

170: 1. Zach Ryder, Orange; 2. Anthony Carter, Colonial Forge; 3. Isaiah Garrett, Stafford.
Plus: No changes in the top three, but King George?s Jacob Tucker could easily be in the mix.

182: 1. Zach Martinez, Colonial Forge; 2. Chris Berrios, Riverbend; 3. Josh Thomas, Spotsylvania.
Mea culpa: That?s Z?A?C?H because one of the area?s clearest-cut No. 1?s deserves to have his first name spelled correctly.

195: 1. Chris Carter, Colonial Forge; 2. Jacob Ralph, North Stafford, 3. Brandon Gallahan, Chancellor.
Overtime: That?s what Carter needed to post a 3?2 win against Ralph and move into the top spot.

220: 1. Cameron Houston, Stafford; 2. Patrick Grayson, Colonial Forge; 3. Jamie Deason, Riverbend.

A change? Nope. though we?ve got our eye on some other folks here.

285: Um?
Yeah, that?s right: We?ve got a great big circular firing squad at heavyweight, and we can?t wait to hear from you how the big boys should be ranked.
Last week we called Orange?s Billy Knabe ?as firm a No. 1 as we have,? before he lost to Stafford?s Sebastian Silva. But Silva has lost to Colonial Forge?s Aston Williams and Williams hasn?t been able to consistently get in the lineup over teammate Matt Beauleau (who has lost to Silva and North Stafford?s Terrence Kelley).
Is your head spinning yet?
It?s just as bad in the Battlefield District, where the mishmash of wins and losses make the weight class pretty difficult to sort out.
