The regular season concludes on Monday night for the Fairfield fencing team as it hosts rival North Haven.?
The last time the teams squared off, the men's match ended in a tie?while the women lost a close 10-8 decision.? Fairfield, however, will be back at full strength as women's epee captain Lara Veit?has?returned from an injury.?
Fairfield will honor its seniors who will be competing in the final home meet of their high school careers.??The seniors are led by women's captain Charlotte O'Donnell, who is having a stellar season. The epee starter has more wins this year than any other senior with 21, which triples her previous single-season high.
O'Donnell spearheads an improved women's epee squad that for the first time in school history has all three starters reaching double digits in wins. Veit has 16 while fellow senior Lauren McArdle has 15.?
The men are led by epee captain Nick Bernardo, who has 19 victories in a breakout season. Foil captain Garrett Bond will look for the sweep tonight as he is three wins shy of reaching 20.
This year's seniors have been part of a group who, along with head coach John Tejada, helped orchestrate an amazing turnaround for Fairfield fencing.
Last year's team finished the season at the .500 mark for the first time in over five years while this year's squad is 8-2-1.
The other seniors who will be honored include?Greg Convertito, Ernest Mecca and Morgan Warshaw.
