Types of Skin Cancer | uysl.net

Think you know enough about skin cancer and its prevention? There?s more to it than just slathering on the sunscreen each day. Skin cancer is diagnosed more often than all other cancers together, and it?s the most common cancer in the United States.

Did you know slight changes in skin moles can be a sign of malignant cancer? Check out this article from Lifescript.com, your online source for women?s health information, to learn about the different types of skin cancer, including how to identify early signs of different skin cancers. Get expert, doctor-recommended tips on the best treatments and skin cancer prevention methods available. Want a taste of what?s included in the article? It covers the three types of skin cancers:

Melanoma ? The dangerous kind of skin cancer, it begins in the cells that produce melanin, the brown pigment of the skin. Melanoma tends to spread, potentially making it deadly if not caught.

Basal cell carcinoma ? This type of skin cancer grows slowly and rarely spreads.

Squamous cell carcinoma ? This type of skin cancer typically remains in the epidermis but can spread.

The best indicator of these three types of cancers? Moles. Check for irregularities in your moles, including:

Asymmetry ? If a mole isn?t round, it could be a sign of cancer.

Border irregularity ? If a mole has irregular borders with blurred, uneven, notched or ragged edges, it may be cancerous.

Color ? Moles are usually brown. But a mole that changes color to varied shades of brown, tan or black could be cancerous. Those moles with progressed cancer could turn blue, white or red.

Diameter ? Moles with melanoma can grow to be more than 1/4-inch, or about the size of a pencil eraser.

Fortunately, medications and surgery can fight skin cancer, including:

Cryosurgery

Excision

Electrodessication and curettage

Chemotherapy

Radiation

Immunotherapy
