NBR nets record Tk 839cr tax from income tax fairs : Dhaka Mirror

The National Board of Revenue has collected a record Tk 839 crore in tax from the seven-day income tax fairs in 18 districts that ended on Saturday.
Although the NBR had set a target of giving tax-related services to 1,00,000 people in the fairs, the number of visitors who availed themselves of the services was 3.46 lakh as the fairs had attracted the public?s attention.
Last year, the number of visitors was only 75,000.
A total of 1,02,198 people submitted tax returns in the current edition of the fair which the NBR has been organising for the last three years to promote hassle-free submission of income tax, said NBR member Kader Sarkar at a press conference in the Officers? Club on Saturday evening.
The number of tax returns submitted nearly doubled this year from the last year?s figure of 62,272.
As the official income tax submission for fiscal year 2011-2012 will end
on September 30, thousands of taxpayers gathered at fair venues in seven divisional headquarters and 11 districts as they often face harassment in tax offices.
NBR officials said that they got an overwhelming response from the people as this year?s tax collection figure of Tk 839 crore is more than double the figure of Tk 414 crore collected last year.
On the last day of the fair on Saturday evening, hundreds of taxpayers were seen in long queues in the Officer?s Club.
In Barisal, hundreds of people also crowded the fair in Barisal Club to get TIN, prepare income tax files and pay taxes, reports New Age?s correspondent.
At the concluding ceremony in Dhaka, finance minister AMA Muhith said that he was surprised to see the overwhelming response from people to pay taxes in the fair.
He, however, said that the number of people who pay taxes in the country is still too low. ?Even if 75 lakh people had paid taxes, the country?s financial health would have got a huge boost,? he said.
NBR?s chairman Nasir Uddin Ahmed, after announcing the conclusion of the fair, told reporters that they would try to hold the fair in every district and upazila town next year.
?We will try to give the people TINs online in next year?s fair.?
The revenue board has set target to collect Tk 35,300 crore in income tax in the current financial year 2012-2013.
It collected Tk 28,261 crore in last financial year.
