Love Marriage or Arranged Marriage ? Which one is ... - Relationships

Love Marriage or Arranged Marriage ? Which one is better? A debate on this topic could go on and on and still may not come to a conclusion which is agreeable to all. Both the type of marriages has their own pros and cons.

In India, whenever we talk of weddings we associate it with Arranged Marriages. Our country is popular for the arranged marriage system where the Parents or elders in the family find a suitable bride/groom with the help of matrimonial portals, newspapers, marriage brokers, relatives or acquaintances. In this system of marriage, the bride/groom is selected after considering a lot of things like the family background, religion, education, financial stability, horoscopes, physical beauty, culture, lifestyle etc. Even the modern and highly educated men and women are seen dumping their partners to marry a guy/girl of parent?s choice. Sometimes Parents resort to emotional blackmail to get their children married according to their wishes. Love marriages, on the other hand, are those where a boy and girl falls in love before getting married. Given below are the Pros and Cons of Love Marriage and Arranged Marriage.?

  • In love marriages, the couples are known to each other and have a good comfort level. They are aware of the likes and dislikes of their partners. Whereas in Arranged Marriages, the couples could be strangers to each other. It might take some time to develop compatibility between couples. The couples may or may not fall in love with each other after marriage.??
  • Arranged Marriages have the full support of the family. When problems arise in such marriages, the parents stand by their children and try to solve the problems. The parental support helps the couples to survive the rocky phases in their relationship. When problems arise in Love marriages, the couples are mostly left alone to deal with them. They often do not get financial or moral support from Parents when they need it.??
  • Most couples in love marriages go for a registered wedding and end up separating from their family. Arranged marriages happen with the blessings of Parents and with proper rituals. A lot of money is also been spend on food, clothes, decoration etc. in an arranged marriage.??
  • Giving or taking Dowry is considered a crime under section 3 of the Dowry Prohibition Act of 1961. As per the Act, one could get a jail term of 1 year if found guilty of giving dowry. The jail term for dowry takers is 5 years. However, there is rarely any Arrange Marriage in India where money or gifts are not given to the groom. In most love marriages, dowry is not taken or given. Religion and financial background of the couples are also not a hindrance in love marriages.
Having said the above, the best option could be an Arranged Love Marriage where there is compatibility between couples and approval from family. The new TV Show on Sony Entertainment Television ?Love Marriage ya Arranged Marriage? tells the story of two friends. Mansi (Samaira Rao) supports Arrange Marriage and gets married Anup Sasodia (Himmanshoo A. Malhotra) , the Guy of her Parent?s choice. Her friend Shivani (Rishika Mihani) believes in love marriage. She marries her love interest and Anup?s younger Brother Saahil (Ashish Kapoor) against the wishes of the family. This Serial tells these two friends and explores this debate on love marriage and arranged marriage without taking sides.
